Conquering Mount Panorama: Our Unforgettable Experience at Challenge Bathurst

Mount Panorama is a race track that commands respect with its challenging layout and rich history. For racing enthusiasts like us, it's the ultimate testing ground—a place to push our skills to the limit. This year, our team had the opportunity to tackle this iconic circuit during Challenge Bathurst, and it was an experience that truly highlighted the unique demands and thrills of driving at such a renowned venue.

The Allure of Challenge Bathurst

Challenge Bathurst isn't just another event on the motorsport calendar; it's a festival of speed that brings together drivers from all walks of life. From seasoned professionals to enthusiastic rookies, everyone shares the same goal: to test themselves against one of the world's most demanding circuits. For those wondering how to become a race car driver or how to start racing, there's no better goal than the tarmac of Mount Panorama.

"It was our most successful Challenge Bathurst yet, with all the drivers exceeding our expectations.”

- Phil Alexander

Preparing for the Mountain

Our lineup featured a mix of talent, including two rookie drivers making their debut: Ronin Lindenmayer and Raphael "Raph" Wood. Both were eager to make their mark and gain invaluable experience. Under the guidance of our head coach, Phil Alexander, we have been working closely with both drivers over the last few months on their Driver Development plans to to provide them with the tools and support they needed to conquer the mountain.

Phil, a seasoned veteran with countless laps under his belt, emphasised the importance of anticipation. "We really focus on helping our drivers think ahead to the next corner because it's such a fast track," he explained. "By the time you're there, you need to be thinking about the next one."

One of our key strategies was utilising a lead car. This allowed our drivers to follow professional racing lines in real-time, drastically cutting down the learning curve. It's one thing to study a track map; it's another to see the ideal line unfold before your eyes at high speed.

Practice Makes Perfect - Driver Times

The format for Challenge Bathurst was Supersprint Thursday & Friday and Regularity Saturday & Sunday with 6 sessions spread over the two days of the event.

Practice Session Times:

  • Ronin Lindenmayer (Mazda 3 MZR SP25): 2:55.5140

  • Phil Alexander (Mazda RX8): 2:55.7400

  • Raphael Wood (BMW M3 E46): 3:04.3430

Sprint 1:

  • Ronin: 2:56.6110

  • Phil: 2:54.9280

  • Raph: 2:57.6630

Sprint 2:

  • Phil: 2:56.0340

  • Ronin: 2:57.3460

  • Raph: 2:50.0280

Sprint 3:

  • Ronin: 2:52.7240

  • Phil: 2:50.1850

  • Raph: 2:50.020

This was the highlight of the event. Ronin smashed his previous best by nearly five seconds. "I improved on corner speed, especially over the top," he said. "It's easy to go fast in a straight line, but daunting to do it over the top with all the tricks coming at you."

Phil continued to set an excellent example, while Raph's relentless focus on technical perfection saw him post a 2:47.4220. "I haven't stopped smiling from ear to ear," he beamed after the session.

Sprint 4:

  • Phil: 2:51.8760

  • Ronin: 2:52.5770

  • Raph: 2:58.5490

As the track heated up, conditions became more challenging. Raph noted that the top end was hot and slippery, leading to a drop in times. Nevertheless, the experience gained was invaluable.

Reflections from the Mountain

Phil had high praise for both rookies. "Ronin was very focused on putting each lap together, really pushing himself to have a good lap time without creating any issues, whether mechanical or in traffic. He did really well improving as his track familiarity increased, with a view to competing in the Bathurst 6 Hour next year."

On Raph's performance, Phil commented, "Raph, being the technical thinker he is, was very analytical about each of the corners. This way of attacking the track meant that he was very accurate, and this played directly into his speed improvement under the conditions."

The Success of Team Effort

We also had three dry hires with more experienced racers who took full advantage of our race car hire at Bathurst services. Their feedback was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the quality of our vehicles and the support provided by our team. Head coach Phil noted "It was our most successful Challenge Bathurst yet, with all the drivers exceeding our expectations. The cars performed beautifully with no issues whatsoever and came home with no marks. Having done this for a number of years now, our experienced team was all over it and was able to give the drivers excellent support. At the end of the day, we want to bring fresh faces to Mount Panorama and make the bucket list real for drivers, and we did just that. Bring on the Bathurst 6 Hour 2025!"

Whether you're eyeing non-competitive track days or high-profile national events, securing the right license is your first step. Partnering with Raceaway Track Time can make this journey smoother, offering expert guidance and support along the way.

Introduction to Motorsport Australia Car Racing Licenses

Motorsport Australia stands as the cornerstone of racing in the country, serving as the primary licensing body for motorsport enthusiasts. Holding a Motorsport Australia license is essential for participating in sanctioned racing events across the nation. With Raceaway Track Time by your side, obtaining your license becomes an achievable goal, setting you on the path to adrenaline-pumping action on some of Australia's most iconic tracks.

Different Types of Motorsport Australia Car Racing Licenses

Speed License

Ideal for those dipping their toes into the racing world, the Speed License is perfect for non-competitive timed events and track days. This license allows you to participate in activities where there’s no door-to-door racing, such as supersprints and regularity trials. It's the gateway for enthusiasts looking to experience the thrill of the track without the intensity of full competition.

Circuit License

Stepping up the pace, the Circuit License is designed for competitive circuit racing events. This license is essential for aspiring racers aiming to enter club and state-level competitions, including door-to-door racing. With a Circuit License, you gain access to most racetracks across Australia, allowing you to test your mettle against other drivers in a controlled, competitive environment.

National Circuit License

For those seeking the pinnacle of racing opportunities, the National Circuit License opens doors to advanced and high-profile events on Australia’s top tracks. This license is an upgrade from the Circuit License, granting you the privilege to compete in prestigious national circuits such as Phillip Island and Mount Panorama in Bathurst. It's the ultimate credential for racers aiming to make a significant impact on the national stage.

License Overview:

  • Speed License: Access to track days and supersprint events without door-to-door racing.

  • Circuit License: Eligibility for club and state racing events with door-to-door competition.

  • National Circuit License: Compete in national-level events on premier tracks.

The Process of Obtaining a Motorsport Australia License

Embarking on your racing journey involves a few critical steps:

  1. Choose the Right License: Determine which license aligns with your racing goals—Speed, Circuit, or National Circuit.

  2. Meet Eligibility Requirements: Ensure you meet the age criteria and secure a medical clearance if necessary.

  3. Complete the Application: Fill out the Motorsport Australia license application form, available on their official website.

  4. Undergo Training: Gain practical experience through training sessions or track days to build your skills.

  5. Pass the Observed License Test (OLT): Required for Circuit and National licenses, the OLT assesses your on-track abilities.

  6. Submit Documentation: Provide all necessary paperwork, including proof of OLT completion and any required medical forms.

  7. Get your Signatures (National license only): You are required to compete in 3 Motorsport Australia sanctioned events and have your licensed signed at each to achieve your National License.

What is an Observed License Test (OLT)?

The Observed License Test is a hands-on skills evaluation conducted by certified instructors. It's a crucial component for obtaining Circuit and National Circuit licenses. The OLT assesses your competence in various aspects of racing to ensure safety and proficiency on the track.

Components of an OLT:

  • Speed Control: Demonstrating the ability to handle the car at high speeds safely.

  • Braking Techniques: Effective use of brakes to navigate corners and avoid collisions.

  • Pit Lane Entry and Exit: Proper procedures for entering and exiting the pit lane.

  • Recognition of Flags: Understanding and responding correctly to flag signals.

  • General Pit Safety: Adhering to safety protocols within the pit area.

  • Cornering Skills: Navigating turns efficiently without compromising control.

  • Speed on the Straight: Maintaining appropriate speed on straight sections.

  • Racing Etiquette: Exhibiting sportsmanship and adherence to racing rules.

Tips for Passing Your OLT Successfully:

  • Gain Experience: Participate in track days and supersprint events to build confidence.

  • Receive Formal Coaching: Engage with professional instructors for personalized guidance.

Australia's diverse range of circuits offers unique challenges and experiences, and understanding which tracks are available for your license level is essential for planning your racing activities.

Speed License

With a Speed License, you're granted access to numerous tracks across Australia for non-competitive events like track days and supersprints. While these events don't involve door-to-door racing, they provide invaluable experience and thrill. You can use your speed license at most racing circuits as long as the event is non-competitive.

Circuit License

Holding a Circuit License elevates your access, allowing you to participate in club and state-level competitive events, including door-to-door racing. This license opens doors to most racetracks across Australia, where you can test your abilities against fellow racers.

Prominent Tracks for Circuit License Holders:

  • Sydney Motorsport Park (NSW)

  • One Raceway (NSW)

  • The Bend Motorsport Park (SA)

  • Sandown Raceway (VIC)

  • Morgan Park RaceWAY (QLD)

With a Circuit License, you can engage in competitive racing, refine your racecraft, and gain exposure in the racing community.

National Circuit License

The National Circuit License is the pinnacle for racers aiming to compete at the highest levels in Australia. This license grants you access to all racetracks nationwide, including the most prestigious and challenging circuits reserved for national-level events.

Elite Tracks for National Circuit License Holders:

  • Mount Panorama Circuit (Bathurst, New South Wales): An iconic track known globally for the Bathurst 1000. Its steep inclines, sharp turns, and high-speed straights demand the utmost skill and concentration.

  • Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit (Victoria): Renowned for its fast and flowing corners overlooking the ocean, it's a favorite among drivers for its smooth surface and challenging layout.

  • Albert Park Circuit (Victoria): The home of the Australian Grand Prix, offering a street circuit experience with world-class facilities.

  • Hidden Valley Raceway (Northern Territory): Features a long main straight and technical corners, hosting national series and providing a unique racing atmosphere.

  • Perth SuperNight Circuit at Barbagallo Raceway (Western Australia): Experience racing under lights at this modernised facility, adding a new dimension to competitive events.

With a National Circuit License, you can participate in marquee events, compete against top-tier talent, and make a significant impact on the national racing scene.

The Benefits of Race Car Hire: Why Savvy Racers Choose to Rent

  1. Skip Maintenance, Transport and Storage Headaches
Maintaining and transporting a race car is no small feat, requiring mechanical know-how, sourcing rare parts, and constant upkeep between events. For those renting or living in units, the lack of garage space adds even more complexity. Add in the hassle of trailering the car to and from the track, and many drivers feel exhausted before they even arrive. RaceAway’s Arrive 'n' Drive service eliminates all these burdens—handling repairs, upgrades, storage, and transport—so you can simply show up and race, with a fully-prepped car waiting for you on the grid.

  2. Access to Multiple Racing Categories and Cars
Why lock yourself into one racing category when you can switch between multiple cars and series? One weekend, you could be tearing up the track in an RX8, and the next, competing in a Mazda MX5 endurance race. Whether it’s club racing, endurance events, or a national meet, race car hire gives you flexibility that owning a single vehicle can’t. This diversity ensures you can experiment with different types of cars to find the right fit for your driving style and goals.

  3. Expert Guidance and VIP Access to Competitive Racing
If you’re serious about leveling up, it helps to have someone with insider knowledge. RaceAway’s team, led by Phil Alexander, opens doors to national-level events and helps you navigate the world of licenses, rules, and strategies. Having someone “on the inside” breaks down the barriers to high-level motorsport, giving you access to the same tools and knowledge as seasoned professionals.

  4. All-Inclusive Support: From Pit Crews to Strategy
A major advantage of race car hire is that you’re not just renting a car—you’re getting a full racing team. From pit crew mechanics managing quick repairs to strategists mapping out the ideal race strategy, your team ensures you’re race-ready from the moment you hit the track. This service allows you to focus entirely on performance, giving you the edge over competitors trying to juggle logistics themselves.

  5. No Surprise Costs
Running a race car independently means dealing with unexpected expenses—blown tires, failed brakes, or engine repairs. With a hire package, everything is pre-budgeted. Tires, fuel, maintenance, and even spare parts are included, letting you know exactly what your racing weekend will cost. This predictability is crucial for racers looking to compete regularly without breaking the bank.

  6. Low Commitment, High Reward
If you’re not ready to invest in a full-time racing career, renting a race car gives you the perfect entry point. You can test the waters in multiple categories, refine your skills with professional coaching, and gradually build experience—all without the risk of committing to car ownership. This approach ensures you only invest more when you’re confident you’re ready to step up.

  7. Freedom to Focus on Driving
Motorsport should be about perfecting your lap times, overtaking competitors, and making it to the podium—not stressing over logistics. With RaceAway’s Arrive 'n' Drive service, the technical and logistical elements are handled for you, allowing you to concentrate entirely on driving and performance

  • Scott Freestone (Spike Man): Scott’s dual experience as a driver and crew member provides a unique perspective, allowing him to ensure that the refuelling hose is securely connected and disconnected with maximum efficiency.

  • Andrew Brennan (Spike Assist): A newer member of the team, Andrew has embraced the fast-paced environment of motorsport and quickly adapted to the precision required for his role.

The Intensity of Pit Stops at the Bathurst 6 Hour

Pit stops at the Bathurst 6 Hour are a high-stakes dance of precision and speed, where every second counts. Each team must complete a minimum of three Compulsory Pit Stops (CPS), with each stop lasting at least two minutes to ensure all tasks are completed safely and according to the regulations. These stops are crucial for refuelling, driver changes, and any necessary car servicing, such as tyre changes or brake pad replacements.

During these intense moments, each team member has a clearly defined role to maximise efficiency and safety. According to the rules, only five personnel are allowed to assist during the refuelling process:

1. Refueller: Handles the refuelling hose and nozzle, ensuring a safe and efficient transfer of fuel.

2. Fuel Rig Emergency Cut-Off Attendant: Manages the safety valve on the fuel rig, ready to shut off fuel flow immediately if needed.

3. Fire Attendant: Positioned behind the car with a 4.5 kg fire extinguisher, ready to react in case of a fire.

4. Refueller Hose Assistant Operator: Assists with handling the refuelling hose, ensuring it’s securely connected and disconnected.

5. General Pit Crew Member: May only assist with opening the car’s refuelling point or helping the driver if they remain in the car.

Additionally, during any servicing of the car, up to four team members are permitted, with roles such as Wheel/Tyre Changers and General Pit Crew. All personnel must stay behind the prescribed line until the car comes to a complete stop and can only cross once it’s safe to begin the pit stop activities.

The Canobolas Motorsport Services team is highly experienced in adhering to these stringent protocols, ensuring that every pit stop is executed flawlessly. Their meticulous attention to detail and strict adherence to safety protocols guarantee that every pit stop is performed as quickly and safely as possible.

Driver Development Program Experience

Manarth Prasad’s passion for racing led him from track days to competitive motorsport with the guidance of RaceAway Track Time’s Driver Development Program. Under coach Phil Alexander, Manarth honed his skills, gained his Motorsport Australia Circuit License, and achieved his dream of racing in the RX8 Cup.

From Aspiration to Achievement: Manarth Prasad’s Journey with RaceAway Track Time

For many aspiring racers, transitioning from casual track days to competitive motorsport can feel like a daunting leap. But for Manarth Prasad, that leap was made possible through dedication, the right mentorship, and the tailored support of RaceAway Track Time’s Driver Development Program. Guided by our experienced head coach, Phil Alexander, Manarth embarked on a journey that saw him progress through endurance racing, hone his skills in various training days, and ultimately achieve his goal of competing at Challenge Bathurst behind the wheel of an RX8.

In this blog, Manarth shares his experience — from obtaining his Motorsport Australia Circuit License to thriving in competitive racing — and how the RaceAway team helped unlock his potential, both on and off the track.

“I've loved cars since I can remember, and had been participating in track days since I'd gotten my license. I was ready to step things up and start competing in motorsport and would need a competition license as I had aspirations of competing in the RX8 cup.

I was referred Raceaway track time for my observed license test and was pleasantly surprised to discover that my license test was to be overseen by Phil Alexander, having been a long time fan of rotaries - I recognised the name, there was a model of one of his former race cars in the workshop I use!

Challenge Bathurst 2023, RaceAway RX8 Cup Car

It's safe to say that what was meant to be a simple one day exam has turned into a valued partnership with a wonderful group of people. Though I'd obtained my license, I was by no means a racing driver - by utilising Raceaway track times connections I was able to access a variety of entry level events that I would not have known had ever existed.

I can’t speak enough to the value to be found in working with someone with the breadth of experience provided by Phil. With a keen eye and understanding of each individual driver that he works with, the strong focus on foundational learning has equipped me with the ability to feel confident in a formal race environment.

Driving skills aside, understanding how to navigate the formalities of organised racing events, the decorum expected by officials at a race track - all of which is made a thousand times easier with the guidance of someone with decades of experience. It means that you're able to focus on the important part, developing your skills and driving.

I was able to participate in lower level events, frequent practice sessions and within five months, I was offered an opportunity to compete in challenge Bathurst. Through everything I had learnt in working with Phil in that short period of time, I actually felt equipped with the knowledge and ability to enjoy and learn from the experience of driving on one of the best tracks in the entire world.

Taking everything I had learnt, just under a year on from obtaining my license and now having experienced a wide variety of cars and racetracks, I have now achieved my goal of competing regularly in the RX8 cup - with the knowledge and skills I now possess, I can comfortably look upon my growth and past self and say that none of the joy any of this has brought to my life would have been possible without the guidance, friendship and company of Phil and the team. I highly suggest that anybody with the interest, whether you're an enthusiast, working on your own growth or someone with genuine aspirations towards being a racing driver - reach out to the team, there's a world of experiences and possibilities out there. All that's missing is you.”

NSW Production Touring Winner

Ronin Lindenmayer dominated Class E at Morgan Park in the NSW Production Touring Series, driving the Mazda SP25 to victory in three thrilling 1-hour races. With expert guidance from Phil Alexander and smart endurance strategy, Ronin finished 17th outright, proving RaceAway Track Time's race car hire and coaching packages are a winning combination.

Ronin Lindenmayer's Triumph at Morgan Park

This past weekend, RaceAway Track Time driver Ronin Lindenmayer showcased his racing prowess at Morgan Park during the NSW Production Touring Series, driving the Mazda SP25 in Class E. The event consisted of three 1-hour races, each requiring a compulsory pit stop of 60 seconds. Ronin secured victories in all three races, demonstrating excellent control and precision throughout the weekend.

Ronin Lindenmayer taking on a class C car at Morgan Park for NSW Production Touring

Starting from the back of the grid in 24th place, Ronin carved his way through the field, finishing an impressive 17th outright. He faced thrilling battles with faster cars, making for some edge-of-your-seat action. The tight, 2km circuit presented ample opportunities for Ronin to hone his skills in traffic, an essential part of endurance racing.

Head coach Phil Alexander played a key role in fine-tuning the race strategy. With no prior benchmark for ths particular Mazda SP25 at Morgan Park, Phil used practice sessions to determine the optimal lap times before shifting the car into "endurance mode" by reducing engine RPM by 500. This strategy prioritised tyre and fuel economy, ensuring the car and driver could run comfortably across all three races.

In terms of performance, the Mazda SP25 ran consistently throughout the weekend:

  • Qualifying: 1:34.9

  • Race 1: 1:34.7

  • Race 2: 1:34.78

  • Race 3: 1:34.27

This weekend’s success not only added another three victories to Ronin’s tally but also provided invaluable preparation for the Bathurst 6 Hour 2025, as RaceAway Track Time continues to refine their endurance racing strategy.

A special thanks goes out to NSW Production Touring and Morgan Park for providing an outstanding venue and managing the event so smoothly. Huge shoutout to the RaceAway Track Time crew, in particular Phil Alexander and Chris Holdt from Prime Motorsport, whose tireless efforts in preparation, pit stops, and race-day logistics ensured the Mazda SP25 was always running at peak performance. Without the dedication of this exceptional team, victories like these wouldn’t be possible.

For those looking to experience the thrill of motorsport, RaceAway Track Time offers Arrive ‘n’ Drive packages and race car hire, making it accessible for drivers at all levels to compete in series like the NSW Production Touring Series.

Observed Licence Tests: Your Gateway to Competitive Racing

Discover how to start racing by taking an Observed Licence Test (OLT) at Pheasant Wood Circuit. This essential step evaluates your driving skills and prepares you for competitive motorsport. Learn what to expect, how to prepare, and how to book your OLT with RaceAway Track Time.

Start Racing: All About Your Motorsport Australia Observed Licence Test (OLT’s)

If you've ever dreamed of taking your passion for motorsport to the next level, obtaining a racing licence is an essential step. For many aspiring racers in Australia, an Observed Licence Test (OLT) is a crucial part of learning how to start racing. This test not only assesses your driving skills but also ensures you understand the safety protocols and racecraft necessary to compete at higher levels of motorsport. In this blog post, we'll delve into what an OLT entails, why it's important, how you can prepare for and succeed in this critical assessment, and how to book your OLT with RaceAway Track Time.

What is an Observed Licence Test (OLT)?

An Observed Licence Test (OLT) is a practical driving assessment required by Motorsport Australia for drivers seeking to obtain a circuit racing licence. This test is designed to evaluate your ability to handle a race car safely and competently in a controlled environment, simulating race conditions. Passing the OLT is mandatory for anyone who wants to compete in club, state, or national level racing events in Australia.

The test is typically conducted at a track day or a designated licensing event, where an accredited instructor will observe your driving performance. The aim is to ensure that you have the fundamental skills and knowledge required to race safely alongside other competitors. If you’re wondering how to start racing, the OLT is a key step in the process.

Why is the OLT Important?

The OLT serves several vital purposes within the world of motorsport:

  • Safety: Racing at high speeds in close proximity to other cars is inherently dangerous. The OLT ensures that you can handle the car safely and react appropriately to different racing scenarios, minimising the risk of accidents on the track.

  • Racecraft: The test evaluates your understanding of racecraft, including track positioning, overtaking, and adhering to racing etiquette. These skills are crucial for competing fairly and effectively in a race setting.

  • Licensing Requirement: Passing the OLT is a prerequisite for obtaining a Motorsport Australia racing licence, which is required to participate in most organised racing events in the country.

What to Expect During Your OLT

The Observed Licence Test is typically conducted as part of a track day, where you'll have the opportunity to demonstrate your driving abilities under the watchful eye of an experienced instructor. Here’s what you can expect:

  1. Pre-Test Briefing: Before heading out on the track, you'll attend a briefing session where the instructor will explain the test's objectives, what they’ll be looking for, and the criteria for passing. You'll also go over essential safety protocols and track etiquette.

  2. Track Sessions: During the test, you'll participate in a series of track sessions where the instructor will observe your driving. They will assess various aspects of your performance, including:

    • Car Control: Your ability to maintain control of the car at speed, including smooth steering, braking, and acceleration.

    • Racing Line: How well you follow the optimal racing line through corners and on straights.

    • Overtaking: Your ability to overtake other cars safely and within the rules.

    • Track Awareness: Your awareness of other cars on the track and your ability to respond to changing conditions.

  3. Post-Test Debrief: After the on-track sessions, you'll have a debrief with the instructor. They will provide feedback on your performance, highlighting areas of strength and any areas that may need improvement. If you meet the required standards, you'll pass the test and be eligible to apply for your racing licence.

  • Vehicle Preparation: Ensure that your car is in excellent condition, with all safety features and mechanical systems functioning properly. This not only helps you perform better but also ensures you meet the safety standards required for the test.

  • Do your Paperwork: Head to Motorsport Australia’s website and fill out your circuit licence form. You will need to complete a medical and return all paperwork to Motorsport Australia. 1. Preparing for Your Track Day

Before you even hit the track, there’s a bit of preparation involved to make sure you’re ready to go. Here’s what you need to know:

Vehicle Preparation

If you’re bringing your own car, it’s essential to ensure it’s in top condition. Check your tyre pressure, oil levels, brakes, and overall mechanical health. Track driving puts a lot of stress on a vehicle, so it's crucial that everything is in working order. If you’re opting for Race Car Hire through RaceAway Track Time, you can rest easy knowing that all our vehicles are meticulously maintained and track-ready.

Licensing and Documentation

For those new to track days, a Track Day Licence is required. Don’t worry if you don’t have one yet—you can easily purchase a Track Day Licence on the day for just $35. This temporary licence is perfect for first-timers or those who don’t hold a regular motorsport licence. Be sure to bring your driver’s licence and any necessary paperwork to speed up the sign-in process.

What to Wear

Safety is our top priority so appropriate clothing is a must. If you don’t own racing apparel - Long sleeves, long pants, and fully enclosed shoes are mandatory. We recommend wearing thin soled shoes such as converse or vans to ensure flexibility in your footwork. If you’re planning to push the limits, we recommend investing in fire-resistant racing gear. Helmets are also required and must meet Australian standard AS1698. If you don’t have a helmet, you can hire one on-site for $35 at sign-on.

3. The Track Day Experience

Once you’re registered and ready to go, it’s time for the main event—getting out on the track! Here’s what to expect throughout the day:

Guided Track Walk

Before you hit the circuit, we start the day with a guided track walk. This is an excellent opportunity to familiarise yourself with the track layout, learn the best lines, and understand where the key braking and acceleration points are, without the pressure of being behind the wheel. Our experienced instructors will lead you through each corner, explaining the nuances of the circuit to help you maximise your performance when you get out there.

Driver Briefing

Before you hit the circuit, all drivers must attend a mandatory safety briefing. This session covers the rules of the day, track etiquette, and important safety information. Our experienced staff will walk you through everything you need to know, from flag signals to pit lane procedures, ensuring you’re fully prepared for your time on the track.

Driver Workshop

Included in your track day entry is access to our popular Driver Workshop. This session is designed to help drivers of all skill levels improve their performance on the track. During the workshop, our professional coaches will cover essential topics such as driving techniques, understanding vehicle dynamics, and maximising your car’s potential. Whether you’re new to the track or a seasoned driver, the insights and tips you’ll gain from the workshop are invaluable. The workshop also includes a Q&A session, giving you the chance to ask specific questions and get personalised advice.

4. Maximising Your Track Day

A track day is more than just driving laps—it’s about learning, improving, and enjoying the experience. Here are some tips to get the most out of your day:

Focus on Consistency

One of the keys to a successful track day is consistency. Rather than trying to set a record on your first lap, focus on consistent, smooth driving. This will not only help you improve your lap times but also reduce the risk of pushing too hard and making mistakes.

Take Advantage of Coaching

Even if you’re confident in your driving skills, a professional coach can offer insights that you might not have considered. Use your coaching sessions to refine your technique and ask questions. Whether it’s mastering the racing line or optimising your braking points, there’s always something to learn.

Stay Hydrated and Rested

Track driving is physically and mentally demanding. Be sure to stay hydrated throughout the day, and take breaks between sessions to rest. A clear mind and a well-rested body will help you perform at your best.

5. Wrapping Up Your Day

The Australian Production Car Championship: Your Ultimate Guide

The Australian Production Car Championship (APC) is one of the premier motorsport events in Australia, offering drivers the chance to compete at a national level. With roots dating back to 1987, the APC has become a key fixture in the Australian racing calendar, known for its competitive spirit and diverse classes. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the history, structure, and requirements of the APC, and how RaceAway Track Time’s Arrive 'n' Drive package can get you on the grid.

RaceAway Track Time Mazda SP25 at Australian Production Cars Phillip Island

A Brief History of the Australian Production Car Championship

The APC was first contested in 1987, making it one of the longest-standing production car racing championships in Australia. Originally, the championship was determined by the results of two races at Winton Motor Raceway in Victoria. Over the years, the APCC has evolved, undergoing various rebrandings and format changes, including its stint as the Australian GT Production Car Championship.

In 2003, the championship reverted to its original name, and from 2008 to 2015, it was awarded under the Australian Manufacturers' Championship. Since 2016, it has been known as the Australian Production Car Series, continuing to draw significant interest from drivers and teams across the country.

The Structure of the APCC

The APCC is a national-level racing series sanctioned by Motorsport Australia, serving as a precursor to the Bathurst 6 Hour, one of Australia’s most challenging endurance races. The 2024 season includes six rounds, each offering unique challenges across some of the country’s most iconic tracks.

2024 APC Schedule

  • Round 1: Sandown Raceway (February 9-11) - 4x 30-minute races

  • Round 2: The Bend Motorsport Park (May 31-June 2) - 4x 1-hour races

  • Round 3: Queensland Raceway (July 12-14) - 1x 3-hour "Fight in the Night"

  • Round 4: Phillip Island (August 23-25) - 4x 1-hour races

  • Round 5: Sydney Motorsport Park (October 18-20) - 4x 1-hour races

  • Round 6: Bathurst International (November 8-10) - 4x 30-minute sprints

Each round features a mix of sprint and endurance races, testing the speed, strategy, and stamina of both drivers and cars. The Bathurst International is particularly notable, pushing competitors to their limits on the legendary Mount Panorama circuit.

Classes in the APC

The APCC features a wide range of production cars, categorised into several classes based on performance characteristics. This class structure ensures that cars of similar capabilities compete against each other, creating fair and exciting racing.

APC Classes

  • Class X - Ultimate Performance: The top tier for the most powerful and advanced cars.

  • Class A1 - Extreme Performance Forced Induction: High-performance cars with turbocharged engines.

  • Class A2 - Extreme Performance Naturally Aspirated: High-performance cars with naturally aspirated engines.

  • Class B1 - High Performance Forced Induction: Slightly less powerful turbocharged cars compared to Class A1.

  • Class B2 - High Performance Naturally Aspirated: Naturally aspirated cars that offer strong performance.

  • Class C - Performance: Mid-range performance cars.

  • Class D - Production: Standard production cars with minimal modifications.

  • Class E - Compact: Smaller, less powerful production cars.

These classes allow for a diverse field, with cars of all types able to compete within their performance bracket.

Points and Awards

The APC uses a points system that rewards consistency and performance throughout the season.

Points System

  • Outright Points: Drivers are awarded points based on their finishing position in each race, excluding Class I.

  • Class Points: Points are also awarded based on a driver's performance relative to others in their class.

To be eligible for a series championship, drivers must compete in at least three rounds, including the final round. The series also includes awards such as the Sprint Cup and Enduro Cup, recognising performance in sprint and endurance races, respectively.

Tyre Regulations

Tyres are a crucial component of performance, and the APC has strict regulations governing their use.

Approved Tyres:

  • Brands: Yokohama, Hankook, Michelin, and Nankang.

  • Compounds: Only medium compounds are permitted, ensuring durability and consistent performance across the races.

  • Usage: A maximum of 12 tyres per round, with one set required to be new.

These tyre regulations are designed to maintain parity and ensure that driver skill and car setup play the primary roles in determining race outcomes.

Racing On A Shoestring Budget

Racing enthusiasts, are you ready to hit the track without breaking the bank? Explore budget-friendly racing opportunities like race car hire, supersprints, club racing, and the magic of MX5 track cars. Let's dive into the world of adrenaline-pumping racing on a shoestring budget!

IS CHEAP RACING POSSIBLE?

For many, the thrill of racing is a passion waiting to be pursued, but the perception of high costs can often be a deterrent. However, racing on a budget is entirely possible, and you don’t need to break the bank to cross the checkered flag. Whether it’s through supersprints, club racing, or booking track days, there are several budget-friendly racing opportunities waiting for you. In this article, we’ll guide you through options to get you on the track without spending a fortune.

Understanding the Costs of Racing

Before diving into the world of racing, it’s important to have a realistic view of the costs involved. From the car itself to entry fees, gear, and maintenance, every aspect contributes to the budget. But don’t let this discourage you! With strategic planning and smart choices, these costs can be managed effectively.

Race Car Hire: A Cost-Effective Solution

For starters, race car hire is an excellent option for those looking to dip their toes into racing without immediately investing in a vehicle. One of the advantages of renting a race car is that they come equipped with the necessary specifications for various racing classes. This means that you can experience the thrill of racing without needing to invest in a car that meets specific racing requirements. Additionally, rental race cars often come with safety gear included, ensuring that you can enjoy the experience with peace of mind.

Renting a race car can be a great option for those who want to try their hand at racing without the long-term commitment of car ownership. By opting to rent a race car, you can enjoy the excitement of racing without the financial burden of purchasing and maintaining a high-performance vehicle. This allows you to experience the thrill of racing with a lower upfront cost, making it a more accessible option for those interested in the sport.

AFFORDABLE TRACK CARS: The Magic of THE MX5

The Mazda MX-5 has earned a reputation as a budget-friendly track car that doesn’t skimp on performance. These nimble and reliable vehicles are a mainstay in club racing and track days, providing an affordable entry point for enthusiasts.

Why MX5s Are Ideal for Budget Racing

MX5s are cost-effective due to their abundance, low cost of parts, and the supportive community around them. Many racing clubs and organisations have specific categories for MX5s, offering a competitive environment that focuses on driver skill rather than budget.

Discovering Budget-Friendly Racing Opportunities

Racing doesn’t have to be a wallet-emptying experience. There are numerous ways to enjoy the sport without spending a fortune.

Supersprints: Your Entry into Competitive Racing

Supersprints are timed competitions that focus on achieving the best single lap around a track. They are an excellent starting point for aspiring racers, providing the excitement of competition with lower costs compared to wheel-to-wheel racing. Entry fees for supersprints are typically reasonable, and since the events are less demanding on the car, maintenance costs are kept to a minimum.

TRACK EVENTS: GRASSROOTS MOTORSPORT

Track run events are often aimed at a grassroots level with budget friendly entry fees and regulations that encompass a wide range of affordable cars.

Pheasant Wood Circuit hosts a number of affordable events, the most notable - the Deputy 4 Hour Endurance Race. Split between 4 drivers this event offers ample track time and door to door racing over 4 hours.

READ MORE about the Deputy 4 Hour

Club Racing: Join the Community

Club racing is the heart of grassroots motorsport. By joining a local racing club, you gain access to a community of like-minded individuals and a variety of events tailored to different skill levels and budgets.

Track Days: Hone Your Skills

Track days are non-competitive events that allow you to drive your car on a professional racetrack. They are a great way to improve your driving skills and enjoy the performance of your car in a safe, controlled environment. While track days require you to have your own vehicle, they offer the freedom to participate as your budget allows, without the pressure of competition.

How to Prepare for Your First Race

Once you’ve decided on the type of racing that suits your budget and interests, it’s time to prepare for your first race. Here’s what you need to know to get started.

Safety First: Gear and Requirements

Safety should always be your top priority. Investing in quality safety gear, such as a helmet, racing suit, gloves, and shoes, is essential. While it may seem like a significant expense, your safety is priceless, and many gear items are a one-time purchase that will serve you for multiple seasons.

Hot Tip: Club, state and national events require different levels of gear. Ensure you check with your provider that the requirements are met for your level of racing. You can check your supp regs for gear specifications.

Technical Preparation: Getting Your Car Race-Ready

If you’re using your own car, it will need to meet specific safety and technical requirements. If you’re prepping it for a certain category then download the supplementory regulations which provide the specifications you need to meet. Joining forums and connecting with experienced racers can help you understand the best practices for preparing your vehicle.

Insider Knowledge: Check the supp regs for requirements on in-car recording gear such as a GoPro or RaceKeeper. Many racing categories have made in-car recording gear mandatory with some even requiring it to be internally hardwired.

Maximizing Your Racing Budget

Racing on a budget requires savvy financial management. Here are some tips to help you stretch your dollars further on the track.

WATCH YOUR ENTRY FEES

Race entries often don’t include a practice day or a garage. If you’re looking at keeping costs down, compare the price of race practice to a track day earlier in the week and forgo the garage to save yourself some dollars.

Finding Sponsorships and Partnerships

Securing sponsorships can offset some of your racing costs. Local businesses may be interested in partnering with you in exchange for advertising on your race car or gear. Be prepared to pitch the benefits of sponsoring you, such as brand exposure to a niche audience.

DIY Maintenance and Upgrades

Learning to perform basic maintenance and upgrades on your car can save you a substantial amount of money. There’s a wealth of information available online, and the racing community is usually eager to share knowledge with newcomers.

Buying Second-Hand Gear and Parts

Buying second-hand racing gear and car parts can lead to significant savings. Always ensure that the gear meets current safety standards and that the parts are in good condition.

COOK YOUR OWN MEALS

Buying meals at the track adds up! Be prepared on race day by prepping your own food and taking plenty of water. You’d be surprised how quickly these little buys add up.
