Challenge Bathurst 2025 WRAP UP

That’s a wrap on Challenge Bathurst 2025 with drivers Eleanor Webber and Jake Hextall…

WEBBER & HEXTALL DRIVE WITH RACEAWAY

Challenge is by far one of our favourite events. It’s as competitive as you want it to be with a supersprint or regularity format and there’s a wide mix of cars from some serious eye candy straight through to regular racers in Pulsars and Excels. It presents as a training ground where the focus is on you & your lap times.

This year, the team were stoked to be bringing along two drivers: Jake Hextall in our Mazda RX8 and Eleanor Webber in the Mazda SP25. We also supported familiar face Raph Wood in his stunning Mustang.

The first two sessions — Familiarity and Practice — were red-flag specials with other cars exploring track limits and sampling the gravel traps. We finished on a high with a fab first sprint in the afternoon getting some proper laps down and smiles all round. With very little data from the mornings sessions we kept the car setup the same despite the heat and the drivers produced decent times.

  • Eleanor: 2:58.9040

  • Jake: 2:49.7330

Friday morning brought cool air and a fresh reset. The difference showed immediately:

Session 1:

  • Eleanor: 2:54.8740

  • Jake: 2:47.8030

Session 2:
A bit more traffic, a few friendly battles, and more consistency:

  • Eleanor: 2:54.5900

  • Jake: 2:48.6530

We wrapped up the day with Jake sliding in another consistent best at 2:48.3510.

In regards to car setup - we ran the SP25 with the same setup we used for the Bathurst 6 Hour: endurance-focused, Hankook control tyres (28 psi front, 32 rear), and Circo pads. The focus with this front wheel drive was to have Eleanor explore the nuances of driving it through the corners.

The RX8 ran it’s usual RX8 Cup setup on Nankang AR1 semis, Circo pads and 26 psi hot all round.

Coach Phil noted -

“For first-timers, Bathurst is all about driving within your limits, building familiarity and learning the lines. Every corner is a surprise the first day — muscle memory just isn’t there yet.”

Particular emphasis went into working The Cutting and Forest Elbow — two corners that have caught out many drivers over the years because of rubber build-up, narrow margins and the consequences of being even slightly off-line. When we asked Jake about his thoughts on Bathurst he commented -

“I love this place … It’s intimidating, it’s huge, there’s no margin for error”

By the end of Day 2, both drivers were running at about 80% of the car’s capacity — exactly where we wanted them. Our goal with Challenge it’s to build the driver. Confidence, focus and fast reflexes come first. The lap time naturally follows. More importantly, this approach creates a solid foundation of racecraft that carries across to any track, any car and any racing format.

The whole team was genuinely proud of both Jake and Eleanor. We’ve watched their growth over the past year, and this weekend showed just how far they’ve come.

Eleanor summed it up beautifully:

“It was a phenomenal experience that both challenged me and taught me so much! Huge shoutout to the entire RaceAway Track Time crew for the coaching, advice and support. Definitely won’t be the last time!”

She later messaged:

“There are no words to express how amazing the week was. I’ve learned so much from both the successes and my mistakes — and I know there’s so much more to work on.”

A massive shoutout to all our team and crew: Jason Varley, Lachie Mineef, Nathan Gregory, Tony Moore, Manarth Prasad, Rod Tippett and of course our head coach Phil Alexander.

WIN AT ONE RACEWAY: JAKE HEXTALL TAKES POLE AT NSW PRODUCTION TOURING R6

Race weekend recap 🚗💨 Jake Hextall and Phil Alexander teamed up in our Mazda SP25 at One Raceway for the NSW Production Touring Championship. Strong pace all weekend, great setup changes, and consistent laps saw us punch above our weight — finishing 1st in Class and 13th outright in the Sunday enduro!

NSW Production Touring Championship – Race Rundown

What a weekend! The RaceAway Track Time Mazda SP25 was back in action at the NSW Production Touring Championship with Jake Hextall and boss Phil Alexander sharing driving duties. Conditions were picture-perfect both days, setting the scene for a fast and competitive weekend of racing.

RaceAway Mazda SP25 at the final round of NSW Production Touring - One Raceway. Pole Position class (e)

We made a few setup changes to dial out some understeer — a move that worked really well. The car felt sharper through the brake-and-turn corners, held its line nicely, and looked after the tyres much better across the stints.

Backing the team this weekend was coach Harry Inwood, working closely with Jake on consistency and racecraft. The key focus was staying clear of the chaos among the faster Class D cars — a strategy that paid off big time, especially in the closing laps of the Sunday enduro, where four cars went door-to-door across the finish line.

Saturday Sprint Races

Qualifying:
Jake set an impressive 1:12.6510, while Phil followed closely with a 1:13.1040

Race 1 (Jake):
Jake showed composure and pace, clocking a best lap of 1:12.7590 and finishing 13th outright.

Race 2 (Phil):
Starting from the back of the grid, Phil put on a storming drive — climbing to 8th place after battling through a field of Class D cars. His fastest lap, a 1:12.1970, was one of the car’s quickest of the weekend.

Sunday – 1 Hour Enduro

Phil took the start from 16th on the grid and made a lightning launch, slicing through the pack in the opening laps and even dicing with some of the quicker Toyota 86s. Around lap seven, the team pulled a clever move — an early pit stop to undercut the opposition. The strategy worked perfectly, putting the Mazda in clean air.

Jake jumped in for the majority of the race and delivered a consistent, mature drive. Lap after lap, he was circulating within a second of qualifying pace, setting his fastest on lap 38 with a 1:12.5870.

Despite the car mixing it with more powerful machinery, the SP25 held its own — punching well above its weight and running cleanly all race long. The team brought it home 1st in class and 13th outright out of 18 cars.

Phil summed it up perfectly:

“Jake is at the start of his motorsport career and the team was exceptionally happy with his performance and mechanical sympathy of the car.”

📊 Weekend Summary
• Qualifying – Jake Hextall: 1:12.6510
• Qualifying – Phil Alexander: 1:13.1040
• Race 1 – Jake Hextall: 1:12.7590 (13th)
• Race 2 – Phil Alexander: 1:12.1970 (8th)

RX8 Cup R5 Rundown - Driver Debut @ Sydney Motorsport Park

RaceAway Track Time driver Jake Hextall made his RX8 Cup debut at Sydney Motorsport Park, climbing from 17th in qualifying to a top-10 finish by Race 4. With consistent personal bests and smart racing, Jake showed huge potential in the one-make series. Want to get started yourself? Try our RX8 Cup Come ’n’ Try package with coaching from Bathurst 1000 top-10 driver Phil Alexander.

Jake Hextall’s RX8 Cup Debut at Sydney Motorsport Park

The RX8 Cup was back in action at Sydney Motorsport Park as part of the Motorsport Australia NSW State Championship, and it was a special weekend for RaceAway Track Time as we welcomed Jake Hextall for his first competitive outing in the series. From qualifying at the back of the field to charging into the top 10, Jake’s debut was the perfect example of what makes the RX8 Cup such an exciting one-make championship.

Jake qualified 17th with a time of 1:53.4308, settling in quickly as he got to grips with the RX8. His first race didn’t go to plan, with an aborted start and inexperience with formation lap/starting procedure catching him out. He dropped to the back of the 21-car grid but fought hard to claw his way back to 17th, setting a new personal best along the way.

Armed with feedback from our coaches, Jake launched into Race 2 with a much stronger start. In a clean and confident drive, he battled through the pack, trading spots with Toby Donohue driving with Maisie Place Motorsport before crossing the line in 13th place, with another PB lap time of 1:52.500.

Sunday’s action showed just how fast the field was running, but Jake rose to the challenge. He strung together three consecutive PBs in Race 3, dipping into the 1:51s for the first time and finishing 14th in a competitive fight. By Race 4, his confidence was clear. Starting 13th, he stayed out of the chaos in a drama-filled race, pushing forward to finish an incredible 10th overall – seven spots higher than where he had started the weekend.

Head coach Phil Alexander summed it up perfectly:

“Jake did a remarkable job for his SMSP RX8 Cup debut. The closer you get to the front in a one-make series like this, the harder it is to gain places. To finish inside the top 10 without a scratch on the car is impressive.”

Jake himself reflected on just how tough and rewarding the category is:

“The one-make series was definitely an eye-opening experience. It really amplifies driver skill. Whenever I thought I had a hold of it, one of the fast guys would pass me like I was standing still. But I learnt a lot and made progress every session.”

It was a brilliant debut made possible by the support of our RaceAway crew and coaches, who kept the car fast and Jake focused all weekend. Thanks also to @armstrongrider for capturing the moments behind the wheel.

For anyone inspired by Jake’s drive, there’s no better way to get started than our RX8 Cup Come ’n’ Try package. Spend a day behind the wheel of a professionally prepared RX8 Cup car with Bathurst 1000 top-10 driver Phil Alexander coaching you through every step. You’ll enjoy five on-track sessions, all the gear you need to race, and the chance to experience the intensity of a true one-make series. It’s the ultimate first step into RX8 Cup racing. RX8 Cup R4 Enduro Rundown @ Sydney Motorsport Park

RaceAway Track Time competed in the RX8 Cup Enduro at Sydney Motorsport Park with returning drivers Mark Wilks and Cassie Dellit. The team focused on endurance race strategy with consistent lap times, strong tyre and brake management, and clean racing across the weekend. RaceAway Track Time offers professional race car hire and Arrive ‘n’ Drive packages for RX8 Cup and more.

The RX8 Cup Enduro weekend at Sydney Motorsport Park brought good, clean racing and plenty of positives for our team. Behind the wheel were two drivers returning to racing – Mark Wilks (A) and Cassie Dellit (B) – both settling back into the groove of RX8 Cup racing.

The cars were heavily scrutineered through the weekend by Motorsport Australia and we were happy to pass with flying colours. Overall the tone of the weekend was good clean competitive racing.

Practice focused on re-familiarising with the cars and running an enduro mindset: keep it under 9000 rpm, using a longer brake pedal sequence, and avoid over-using the tyres. The goal was to maintain competitiveness of the car right through to the end of the enduros where the cars tend to drop off. This played out nicely during the two 50 minute enduros with the car maintaining excellent brake pedal and tyre grip.

Qualifying

  • Mark – 1:52.3232

  • Cassie – 1:58.0899

Enduro 1

  • Best Lap: 1:53.2651 (Lap 4)

Enduro 2

  • Best Lap: 1:53.0119 (Lap 11)

Mark began to find his competitiveness again after some years away from regular racing, moving up around five spots in the second enduro. Cassie built confidence with every session, sharpening her racecraft and improving lap times across the meet.

We finished the weekend in 15th overall, completing 26 laps with a race time of 53:02.2780.

Thanks to Ric, the RX8 Cup crew and Motorsport Australia for organising another fantastic event. Racing in this category always feels like home, especially with Phil’s long connection to rotary racing at the heart of it all.

3 Pro Coaching Tips to Improve Your Lap Times @ One Raceway – Wakefield 300 Prep

With the Wakefield 300 just days away, pro coach Phil Alexander shares three key tips to master One Raceway — from rethinking Turn 1 to finding the perfect slingshot onto the straight — so you can improve your lap times and keep your tyres alive all race long.

With the Wakefield 300 coming up this weekend at One Raceway, it’s the perfect time to fine-tune your driving. We’ve spent a lot of time here lately with professional race coach Phil Alexander, and we’ve picked out three sections of the track where a smarter approach can drop your lap times and make your tyres last the distance — especially important if you’re running a front wheel drive car in an endurance race.

One Raceway Track Map

Click to download One Raceway Track Map

1. Turn 1 – Forget the Traditional Apex

Most drivers naturally aim for the inside apex at Turn 1, but Phil’s advice is to break that habit.

Instead:

  • Go wide – use all the available track width on the outside.

  • This opens up Turn 2, letting you hit the apex cleanly and carry more speed through the exit.

  • That extra momentum feeds straight into Turn 3, giving you an advantage early in the lap.

It’s not just about speed — this line means less steering lock and less tyre scrub, which pays off over the course of 300km.

2. Slingshot Onto the Straight – Choose the Kind Line

The last corner called “Slingshot” is a right turn double-apex complex with a flick left that decides your run down the main straight. There’s more than one way to tackle it, but for endurance racing, the right choice can save your tyres.

Phil’s take:

  • Test all approaches – running high for the exit or tucking in tight to the inside kerb.

  • In a front wheel drive endurance car, staying tight on the second apex has proven quickest and gentlest on the tyres.

  • Avoid big steering angles here — if your tyres are squealing, you’re scrubbing speed and cutting tyre life short.

3. The Straight – Work the Tow

One Raceway’s main straight is longer than before, which means drafting can give you a real edge.

Here’s how to make it work:

  • Get behind a car that’s just quick enough to break the air for you without pulling away too fast.

  • Position yourself out of the slingshot close enough to latch onto their slipstream.

  • Use the extra speed to your advantage without using more fuel or wearing the tyres.

In a long race like the Wakefield 300, this is “free power” — and it all adds up.

Wrapping It Up

Heading into the Wakefield 300, keep these three things in mind:

  • Go wide into Turn 1 for a faster setup into Turn 2.

  • Take the most tyre-friendly line through the slingshot.

  • Use the tow down the straight whenever you can.

Small changes like these can help you improve your lap times while keeping your car in the fight right to the chequered flag.

Driven by Raphael Wood and Jason Liddell, our car stood out in a record-breaking 60-car field — the largest in Sydney 300 history.

A Night of Intense Racing: Race Report

Qualifying

We qualified just 0.6 seconds off our breakout time, placing us 7th in Division E out of 12 entries — the most Division E cars ever seen at the Sydney 300. Our time: 1:54.6101.

Raf’s Opening Stint

Raf Wood took the green flag and quickly found his rhythm, but a fuel leak incident from another car forced him to take evasive action and lose several positions early. Undeterred, Raf dug in and began working his way back through the class, improving lap times with every circuit.

Pit Strategy Pays Off

A well-timed Safety Car provided the perfect opportunity for our fuel stop, tyre change, and driver swap. Thanks to smooth execution by our pit crew — Rod Tippett, Tony Moore, Nigel Fuke, and Townsend Signs’ fuel rig team — the car was back on track without a hitch.

Jason on the Charge

Jason Liddell took the wheel and quickly began picking off competitors. His stint was fast, clean, and commanding — his best lap a blistering 1:54.5493. He avoided drama during a hectic Safety Car restart involving multiple cars, including a close moment with an RX8.

Late-Race Drama

The skies opened with 7 laps to go, adding tension to the final stint. Jason stayed composed in slippery conditions and crossed the line 6th in Division E and 28th outright — a phenomenal effort for a naturally aspirated production car against a grid packed with high-horsepower machinery.

Record-Breaking Sydney 300: The Bigger Picture

This year’s race was historic:

  • 77 laps completed – the longest Sydney 300 ever

  • 60 starters, 18 DNFs, and just 68.3% finish rate

  • Rain, Safety Cars (7!), and countless lead changes

  • Mazda’s 10th outright Sydney 300 win

  • 110 drivers, 41 finishers – a high attrition but fierce competition

For us, this event underlined our race prep quality and driver focus. In a race where just finishing is an achievement, to bring home a Division top-10 and outright top-half is a result we’re proud of.

How to Start Racing

Looking for how to get into motorsport? Start racing with RaceAway Track Time! Learn how to start racing at Pheasant Wood Circuit with expert coaching, race car hire options, and Motorsport Australia licence support. Your motorsport journey begins here — safe, simple, and adrenaline-packed!

Roadmap: how to get into Circuit Racing in NSW

At RaceAway Track Time, the number one question we get asked is "How do I start racing?"

If you’ve ever dreamed about lining up on a starting grid and chasing that chequered flag, you’re not alone. Motorsport can seem overwhelming at first — but with the right team behind you, it’s far more accessible than you might think.

Whether you’re a total beginner or track day hero, here’s our proven formula for getting into motorsport.

Step 1: Get Comfortable on Track

The very first step is simple: get yourself on a racetrack.

You don't need a fancy race car. You can start with your road car at one of our Track Days at Pheasant Wood Circuit. These days are designed to help you get familiar with driving at speed, safely, in a supportive environment.

There’s a reason we love training at Pheasant Wood Circuit. This tight, technical circuit constantly challenges you to think ahead and link your corners together — a crucial skill for any future racer. The track layout is ideal for developing precision and consistency, and its excellent viewing points & open pit lane make coaching even more effective.

Every event includes:

  • Morning Track Walk - led by experienced coaches

  • Open pit lane format – drive as much as you like

  • Group workshop

  • Live Natsoft timing - track your lap times

Don’t own a racecar? We highly recommend checking out our Arrive ‘n’ Drive packages available at Pheasant Wood Circuit or One Raceway. These packages give you a day on track in your chosen vehicle (Subaru BRZ, Toyota ‘86, Mazda MX5) with one-on-one coaching and track day entry included. Even better - there are plenty of opportunities for Arrive ‘n’ Drive with midweek and weekend dates available.

Arrive ‘n’ Drive racecar hire at Pheasant Wood Circuit or One Raceway. Raceaway Track Time BRZ racecar hire.

Step 2: DRIVER Coaching to Fast-Track Your Progress

Speed isn't just about mashing the throttle — it’s about race craft.

That's where coaching makes all the difference.
Our professional driver coaches teach you everything you need to know to drive smarter, not harder:

  • Race lines and braking techniques

  • Overtaking and defending positions

  • Traffic management

  • Wet weather skills

  • Mindset and consistency under pressure

Whether it’s your first time on track or you're aiming to be race-ready, our coaching helps you skip the trial-and-error phase and get faster, safer, and more confident — quicker.

Step 3: Get a Taste for Racing – The Deputy 4 Hour

Once you’re comfortable at speed and have a handle on your car control, it’s time to get a real taste of racing.

Enter the Pheasant Wood Circuit - Deputy 4 Hour Enduro.

Step 4: Join the Big Dogs – Get Your Motorsport Australia License

If you’re serious about racing, you’ll need to hold a Motorsport Australia Circuit License.
Here’s how you get it:

1. Apply for a Motorsport Australia License

  • Head to the Motorsport Australia website and apply for a Circuit License.

  • You'll also need a Motorsport Australia Medical Examination Form completed by a doctor.

2. Complete an Online Theory Module

  • Motorsport Australia requires you to complete an online theory component covering race regulations, safety protocols, flags, and driver responsibilities.

3. Book and Complete an Observed Licence Test (OLT)

  • Your final step is the Observed Licence Test (OLT) — and this is a genuine test you must be adequately prepared to pass. You can complete your OLT with us at any upcoming track day & certain events.

During the OLT, Motorsport Australia officials assess your:

    • Car control at speed

    • Track awareness and positioning

    • Correct use of flag signals

    • Pit entry and exit procedures

    • Overall attitude to safety

Important:
If you are not adequately prepared, you can fail your OLT. That’s why we strongly recommend gaining track day experience and professional coaching beforehand to boost your chances of success.

Step 5: Step into Club, State, or National Level Racing

Once you've got your Motorsport Australia License and tasted competition, the next step is planning a racing calendar that suits your goals, experience, and budget.

At RaceAway Track Time, we work closely with drivers to tailor a path forward.

Here’s how it usually looks:

Club and State Level Racing

If you're looking to build experience without massive travel or costs, we'll often recommend starting with a familiar track like Sydney Motorsport Park or One Raceway.

You might race in:

  • NSW Production Touring Car Championship — in one of our proven Mazda SP25s

  • MX5 Cup Series — using the same MX5 racecar you would have driven in the Deputy 4 Hour

  • APRA (Australian Pulsar Racing Association) Series - Highly competitive one make series

These are an excellent starting point, growing your skills in highly competitive yet welcoming environments.

National Level racing the Class E Winners, RaceAway Track Time at the 2025 Bathurst 6 Hour, Mount Panorama.

National Level Racing

Got your sights set on Bathurst or Phillip Island?
Then you’ll need a National Motorsport Australia License — which requires completing three National-level Motorsport Australia race meetings.

In this case, we may recommend entering:

  • Australian Production Cars Championship — in the Mazda SP25

  • RX8 Cup Series — a highly popular and cost-effective national series

  • NSW Production Touring — where certain rounds are eligible as National events

Completing these will qualify you to compete in iconic races like the Bathurst 6 Hour or Challenge Bathurst, where we also offer full Arrive 'n' Drive packages.

BATHURST 6 HOUR 2025 RECAP

RaceAway Track Time took on the 2025 Bathurst 6 Hour with two Mazda SP25s, securing a Class E win with Car #35 driven by Ronin Lindenmayer and Kym De Britt. Despite Car #53 retiring with a mechanical issue, the team showcased grit, teamwork, and skill across the board. A true test of endurance racing at Mount Panorama.

Practice & Preparation

Class E Winners of the Bathurst 6 Hour 2025, RaceAway Track Time.

Friday and Saturday practice sessions ran smoothly, with both drivers and cars settling in well. We drilled driver changes, dialled in the refuelling crew, and reviewed regulations, pit lane processes, and race strategy. Practice 3 ended early due to a red flag—close call for Kym, who was just behind the incident, visible on our in-car footage.

Qualifying

With a short window and a massive 70-car field, our drivers kept their cool. Ronin put Car #35 P2 in Class E, while Dion secured P4 in class for Car #53.

Warm-up ran without drama, with Jason putting in a solid 2:57 lap. A minor suspension tweak to Car #53 paid off, with Tony giving it the thumbs up ahead of the start.

RACE DAY

With plenty of action in the faster classes, there were a number of bigger cars starting behind us on the grid - including the winning car. Our starting drivers were made aware of the impending stampede and the strategy was to get out of the way and then use the cleared path. Both Ronin and Tony launched cleanly off the grid, executing the strategy and settling into consistent pace. Ronin held 2:52s, Tony 2:55s—right on our fuel window.

DRAMA

Just one hour in, Car #53 developed a misfire above 4000rpm. After an initial stop to check plugs and sensors, the team rolled the car into the garage. From there, a mechanical marathon began—an airflow meter change, MAF sensor check, and a flurry of parts raided from our donor car, which ended the day looking like a skeleton. Despite enormous effort, the issue persisted, and #53 was sadly retired. The disappointment was heavy, but the work ethic of our crew was nothing short of phenomenal with the team working until the final minutes. Our head mechanic more than earned his dinner that night.

VICTORY FOR #35

It could not have been a more different story across the garage with Ronin and Kym smashing through the field and firmly planting themselves in first place about three quarters of the way into the race. We stayed out during the many yellow flags early on in the race allowing us to get almost 2 laps up on the second in class. With some clean racing Brewer caught us only to have a mechanical breakdown 2 laps later.

During Kyms first stint he avoided the Lendrive i30 that was forced wide at turn 1 by Mustang #9, bit of excitement forcing him to take evasive action so he didn't get collected as it went into the safety road.

Another exciting moment caught on TV as Ronin got caught going up the hill between X Class #23 and #52. A double overtake some say, others call it a Beamer sandwich, all adding to the excitement of the day.

The strategy with the two drivers was to navigate the driver times by having them split the race into 2 x 2 hours and 2 x 1 hours and do their longer sessions first up followed by shorter session with Ronin starting and Kym finishing.

Halfway through Ronins second stint we blew our front right tyre at Forest Elbow, Ronin radio'd in and the team rallied to pull themselves together quickly. The televised tyre change featured plank of Wood due to the car sitting literally on pit lane.

As soon as the team saw that our direct competition were (sadly) no longer a threat, Kym focussed on bringing the car home backed off to about 75% staying comfortably at the 2.55 mark and bringing home the class E win.

final thoughts

Bathurst 6 hour truly tests drivers ability, teamwork and mechanical preparation. Out of field of 70 cars, 51 finished the race.

Our teams effort over the week was truly A-grade and I'd like to truly thank you all for making the experience so incredible.

To our wonderful drivers - congratulations on taking on the Mountain. For many of you it was your first time experiencing the iconic tarmac and we were honoured to be able to take you there.

A huge thank you to our wonderful partners and supporters - in particular our incredible refuellers. Canobolas Motorsport Services - it wouldn't be Bathurst without you guys.

What Happened to the Yellow Pages RX7?

The Yellow Pages RX7 is a cult classic of Australian motorsport, a striking machine that raced alongside legends in Production Touring Group C. Driven by Phil Alexander and Tony Kavich in the Bathurst 1000, the car's bold yellow livery and unique backstory make it unforgettable. The sponsorship deal, secured by Phil through a bold pitch at Yellow Pages headquarters, turned this RX7 into an icon. Now, thanks to Carey McMahon and his meticulous restoration, the legendary RX7 is still race-ready, preserving its place in motorsport history. #YellowPagesRX7 #PhilAlexander #ProductionTouring #RX7 #Bathurst1000

Written by Kinsey Alexander -

As a young girl I heard the war stories about my dads racing career. It was Mazda this and RX7 that. A career that spanned decades and continents. It was hard to make head or tail of some of the stories because what my dad sees as “amazing” is very different to the outside world. Phil Alexander puts alot of stock into being the underdog and he holds high the value of being able to come out on top against all odds. It’s not neccesarily all about the wins or the accolades - it’s the gearbox that got rebuilt overnight and re-entered to finish the race.

For me, this meant that it took until I stood on the main straight of Bathurst as a 30 something-year-old to really understand the scope and enormity of my dad’s career. One that may be remembered by the Yellow Pages RX7.

CHECK OUT THE VIDEO ⤵️

During the Bathurst 6 Hour in 2023, not one, but two “fans” popped in our garage to see Phil. One had brought in a model car of the Yellow Pages RX7. I’m used to picking up the “breadcrumbs” of stories and knowledge that naturally filter through as the manager of RaceAway, and it pinged in my brain, we need to do a story on this.

I had brought up Bathurst with Phil many many times. He always spoke about his beloved Tokico RX7 which top 10’d in the 1000 back in the early 1980’s, both under his driving and that of the Ron Gillards and Mark Gibbs teams. To say the Tokico RX7 was held high on the shelf was an understatement - many a time my parents had made the joke that I (their first born daughter) was to be named after this vehicle. It’s pretty rarified air to be pulling a top 10 in the Bathurst 1000 and again it wasn’t until recently I fully understood the enormity of this.

Turning the page quite literally to the Yellow Pages RX7. A call came in from the highly intelligent and very well spoken Carey McMahon (we got on like a house on fire). Carey was rebuilding the Yellow Pages RX7 and wanted Phil to be at the test run. I thought - why not - great for the socials. As car rebuilds go, it was sometime, maybe 6 months to a year later that this eventuated.

Pulling up at the garage, the stunning Yellow Pages RX7 was there in all it’s (very yellow) glory. Phil walks in and I can see him eyeing the car off thinking ‘old friend’.

Let’s get to the story. Phil is sitting at his desk at Alexander Rotary, #35 Paramatta Road. The air is thick with that “New Car Smell” which only faintly covers the gearbox oil smell. He’s checking out the Yellow Pages which Alexander Rotary has been advertising in and he says to himself “one of the squares is about $4000… that’s $16,000 a page.” I imagine at this point he scoffs to himself and thinks, boy i’m in the wrong business. So as legends go, he calls up his mate Nick Middenway who “…was apart of the ARDC somehow…” - more importantly was an artist. Nick paints up a Yellow Pages covered RX7 because “…back in those days there were no graphic designers, vinyl lettering or computers per say…”

Phil, with artwork underarm, marches up to the Yellow Pages offices “somewhere in North Sydney.” At this point in the story I asked him - Did you book an appointment? He cheekily smiled at me and replies as if I were accusing him “Yeah, of course”. As Phil tells it, he showed them the artwork and said something to the words of “How’s this then folks?” and they agreed to sponsoring the car.

As his Tokico RX7 was leased that year to Ron Gillard and Mark Gibbs, he snagged a drive with panel beater Tony Kavich who had a Bathurst ready (but not-yet-yellow) RX7.

I can understand, through the lens of my fathers eyes, why he didn’t speak about the Yellow Pages RX7 much as I was growing up. Phil was coming off of the back of a 9th place finish in 1983 in the Tokico car. The Yellow Pages car sadly didn’t live up to expectations and had “…issues” during the race. Starting off in 43rd position, the car was pulled after 177 laps with engine issues (did someone say rotary?). But this isn’t the point of the story.

The Yellow Pages RX7 was a striking car on the grid. Many of the touring cars featured lengthwise racing stripes in red and blue from top to tail. If you closed your eyes and imagined racing back in the 80’s you would be able to sum up the general vibe. The Yellow Pages in bold yellow with the black walking fingers logo certainly stood out, especially with how widely known the company was. I need not get on my high horse and explain to the younger folk that the Yellow Pages was an essential household item, the thick books full of businesses in every home right next to the family phone - and boy did they take up alot of space (not happy Jan). Coupled with the racing era of legends the Yellow Pages RX7 sat on the stage with the likes of Dick Johnson, Allan Moffat and Peter Brock, regulars in the Production Touring group C Class.

And this is the point of the story I would like to make.

Phil Alexander, self-made, mechanic, rotary expert, racer, had a pretty simple dream - to race at Bathurst. Strolled into the Australian Yellow Pages headquarters, armed with a piece of artwork and pitched his story. To this day, the Yellow Pages RX7 is a cult classic - the poster child of the Group C Production Touring Class. And, like my dad, it’s still ready to race - thanks to the diligent efforts of Carey McMahon and Nigel Bolling.

Yellow Pages RX7, Production Touring Car Class C, Phil Alexander, Philip Alexander, Tony Kavich, Carey McMahon Racing, RX7 Phil Alexander, Alexander Rotary, Bathurst 1000, Hardy Bathurst 1000, Class C Bathurst 1000, RX7 Bathurst 1000

Huge thank you to Carey McMahon & Nigel Bolling for rebuilding the Yellow Pages RX7 and allowing Phil to have a run. What a fantastic way to be reunited.

300 Series: endurance racing at it’s finest- Sydney, wakefield (one raceway) and winton!

The EPIC 300 series is back at Sydney Motorsport Park, Winton Raceway and One Raceway! Check out the 2025 Motor Racing Australia Calendar here…

The Ultimate Endurance Challenge: The 300 Series is BACK!

The 300 Series is back for 2025, bringing endurance racing action across three of Australia’s most exciting circuits. Featuring the Sydney 300, Wakefield 300 (One Raceway), and the Viola Wealth Winton 300, this legendary series challenges drivers with 300 km of intense racing, compulsory pit stops, and strategic driver changes.

The 300 series offers a huge variety in terms of tracks and conditions with the Sydney 300 being under lights. It’s a massive draw to the Bathurst 6 Hour crowd, holding all the same elements of the popular National event.

In our opinion - the most exciting thing about the 300 is the chance to be on such a massive starting grid. With around 60-70 cars starting each year, the enduro has timed classes making it accessible to the humble Hyundai Excel whilst still enticing the beefy, kitted out M3’s.

THAT’S A WRAP ON 2024🥂

2024 was a landmark year for RaceAway Track Time, with multiple podium finishes, a series win, and unforgettable racing moments. From the Bathurst 6 Hour to local track days, we pushed boundaries, trained new drivers, and delivered intense competition. Here's a look back at a season full of excitement and success.

What a year for RaceAway!🏁

2024 has been nothing short of spectacular, with a season packed with milestones and achievements. This year, we reached new heights, taking on a total of 30 race meetings and hosting 21 track days at Pheasant Wood Circuit. We also added 4 exciting events at One Raceway to our calendar, making it a truly action-packed year. One of the standout moments was taking two cars to the Bathurst 6 Hour for the first time, with both teams making it onto the podium—a monumental achievement for us all!

Our rookie driver, Ronin Lindenmayer, made waves in the NSW Production Touring Series, and after a strong first round, he took home the Series win in Class E, trophy in hand.

We also tackled all 8 rounds of the Deputy 4 Hour, mixing up our lineup with both seasoned drivers and newcomers, and proudly secured a 2nd place finish in the series. A fantastic outcome for everyone involved!

In addition, regular driver John Connolly raced in the MX5 Cup and took home a well-deserved trophy at the One Raceway round of NSW Production Touring.

Challenge Bathurst was another highlight, with 5 of our cars on track and plenty of action throughout the event. We also traveled to Queensland and competed in the Sydney and Winton 300 series, further solidifying our presence in the motorsport world.

Head Coach Phil Alexander says:

"I'm thrilled with the intensity of our racing this year. Racing almost every weekend is a dream for many, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to see our driver training and race car hire services grow. We’ve welcomed many new faces to what I consider to be the best sport”

“A huge thank you to our coaches, pit crew, and management team. There’s so much that goes on behind the scenes, and we couldn’t do it without the heroic efforts of everyone involved.

A special shout-out to Mark Crutcher for taking over the Australian Franchise of the TA2 series, Jayden Ojeda for joining Mercedes AMG Racing, Seth Gilmore (who graduated with us earlier in the year) for winning the Aus F4 rookie cup, Josh Haynes for winning the TA2 Championship, Maisie Place for celebrating her 100th RX8 event, Rod Tippett for coming onboard as a coach with RaceAway, Scott Tidyman for coming 2nd outright and winning the Masters division in the APRA series, and to One Raceway for bringing vibrancy to our racing calendars again!"

Thank you to everyone who made this year possible! We’re already looking forward to what 2025 will bring. Stay tuned for more excitement ahead! 🚗💨🏁

NSW Production Touring Round Recap at One Raceway

NSW Production Touring race recap! The RaceAway team had two cars on the grid for the One Raceway round bringing home a trophy in the Connolly & Alexander team. Ronin displayed excellent racecraft with competitive times in the Mazda RX8.

Arrive N Drive at One Raceway Racing: A Thrilling NSW Production Touring Weekend with Race Car Hire

The RaceAway Track Time team delivered an outstanding performance at the recent NSW Production Touring round held at One Raceway Racing. The team fielded two race cars—an RX8 driven by rising star Ronin Lindenmayer, and a Mazda SP25 piloted by the duo of Phil Alexander and John Connolly. The event featured three action-packed 40-minute endurance races that tested the drivers’ skill, patience, and consistency. It was a weekend of pure motorsport excitement, featuring hard-fought wet-weather battles on Saturday and impressive performances across the board. For enthusiasts looking to get involved in the sport, race car hire from RaceAway Track Time provided an accessible route to competitive racing.

Ronin Lindenmayer in the RaceAway Mazda RX8

Ronin Lindenmayer Shines in the Mazda RX8
Despite being in his first year of competitive motorsport, Ronin Lindenmayer showcased remarkable talent and control in the team’s Mazda RX8. Throughout the three endurance races, he steadily improved his lap times, pushing closer to the benchmarks set by seasoned RX8 racers. Head Coach Phil Alexander praised his rapid progress and consistency:

“Ronin’s consistency in times is exceptional, especially for only having started his motorsport career this year. Having times within a second of really experienced RX8 racers is nothing to sniff at.”

Ronin’s achievements peaked during Race 3, where he clocked a best time of 1:12.8560. Moreover, he consistently lapped in the 1:13 range, proving that talent, combined with the right coaching and track time, leads to significant improvements in a short period.

Ronin’s Best Times:

  • Race 1: 1:13.1050

  • Race 2: 1:13.4500

  • Race 3: 1:12.8560

Phil Alexander & John Connolly in the RaceAway Mazda SP25

Alexander & Connolly Adapt in the Mazda SP25
Meanwhile, Phil Alexander and John Connolly faced extreme weather conditions in their Mazda SP25. With heavy rain impacting Race 1, visibility was a major concern—especially for a Class E car at the tail end of the pack. Still, the pair demonstrated adaptability, maintaining steady lap times and progressively moving through the field. As Phil Alexander noted:

“Consistency is really important in motorsport, particularly in endurance racing, because it’s what brings the car home in the end.”

The team came home on the podium in second place with a smack on the wrist to the chief for pulling into the pits too fast - obviously needed a toilet stop.

Alexander & Connolly’s Best Times:

  • Race 1: 1:14.7650

  • Race 2: 1:14.1510

  • Race 3: 1:14.0050

A Thank You to One Raceway Racing & Supporters
A massive thank you goes out to the NSW Production Touring organisers and Terry “Top Dog” Denovan (MRA) for hosting a fantastic meeting. Racing at One Raceway’s home track was an absolute pleasure, made even more rewarding by the team’s strong results and the vibrant atmosphere.

Our dedicated pit crew—Tony, Nigel, Karen, Maisie, and Josh—deserve special recognition. Their behind-the-scenes expertise and hard work ensured both the RX8 and the SP25 remained competitive, safe, and reliable throughout the event. Without their tireless efforts, this success would not have been possible.

For anyone looking to break into the sport through race car hire and experience the thrill of NSW Production Touring, RaceAway Track Time remains the go-to choice, offering access to top-tier racing opportunities at some of Australia’s most iconic circuits.
