Whether you're a seasoned pro or just curious about the world of track cars, this guide will help you navigate through the essentials.

What Is a Track Car?

A track car is a vehicle that has been either specifically designed or modified for use on racing circuits. Unlike regular street cars, track cars often have performance enhancements such as upgraded brakes, stiffer suspension, and high-performance tyres to handle the rigors of high-speed driving. Some track cars also come with stripped-out interiors to reduce weight and roll cages for added safety.

A pricey but sexy option for a track car the Porsche 911 offers A SMOOTH DRIVE on the tarmac.

When selecting a track car, you need to consider factors such as performance, reliability, cost, and personal preference. Here are a few popular models that have proven themselves on the circuit:

Subaru BRZ and Toyota '86

The Subaru BRZ and its twin, the Toyota '86 (also known as the GT86), are affordable, rear-wheel-drive sports cars that are praised for their balanced handling and lightweight chassis. While they may not boast the highest horsepower figures, their agility and responsiveness make them ideal for track enthusiasts who enjoy a car that communicates well and can be pushed to its limits.

The Subaru BRZ or Toyota ‘86 make excellent track cars with their superior balance and ACCESIBLE PRICE TAG.

Mazda MX-5

The Mazda MX-5, also known as the Miata, is a perennial favorite among track day aficionados. Its compact size and nimble handling, combined with a well-engineered rear-wheel-drive layout, make it a joy to drive on the track. Plus, the MX-5's large aftermarket support allows owners to easily modify and tune their cars for even better performance.

Porsche 911

For those with a higher budget, the Porsche 911 is a legendary car with a rich racing heritage. Known for its distinctive rear-engine layout and exhilarating performance, the 911 offers a variety of models that are track-ready right from the dealership. From the Carrera to the GT3, each 911 is engineered to deliver a thrilling driving experience.

Preparing for Track Days

Safety First

Before you hit the track, ensure that both you and your car are properly prepared. Safety equipment such as helmets, proper racing seats, and harnesses are a must. Additionally, your car should be in top mechanical condition, with special attention paid to the brakes, tires, suspension, and fluids.

Track Days Near Me: Finding the Right Venue

To find track days near you, search online for local racing circuits or organisations that host track events. Many tracks offer driving instruction for beginners, which can be an invaluable experience when you're just starting out.

RaceAway Track Time hosts track days at Pheasant Wood Circuit, only 1.5 hours from Sydney or Canberra.

What to Expect on a Track Day

Track days are typically well-structured events. You'll have a driver's briefing to go over the rules and safety protocols. Expect to have time for both driving and spectating, which is a great opportunity to learn from others.

Driving Techniques for the Track

Track driving requires a different set of skills compared to regular driving. Mastering techniques such as heel-toe shifting, late braking, and understanding the racing line can significantly improve your lap times and overall experience.

The Racing Line

The racing line is the optimal path around the circuit that allows for the fastest lap time. It involves taking the widest, smoothest, and straightest route through corners to maintain the highest possible speed. Learning proper racing lines from professional racing instructors can benefit your lap times immensly. One on one performance driver coaching will give you valuble insight into how to navigate racing lines in your track car.

Heel-Toe Shifting

Heel-toe shifting is a technique used to match the engine speed to the wheel speed during downshifting, allowing for smoother and more efficient gear changes.

Late Braking

Late braking is a method where you brake as late as possible before entering a corner to minimize the time spent decelerating. This technique can shave seconds off your lap times but requires practice to master.

Maintaining Your Track Car

Maintaining a track car is crucial for both performance and safety. Regular maintenance should include:

  • Checking and changing fluids regularly

  • Inspecting brake pads, rotors, and fluid

  • Ensuring tyres are in good condition and properly inflated

  • Checking the suspension components for wear or damage

Ensure your track car is properly maintained for optimal performance

Upgrading Your Track Car

Once you're comfortable with your car's performance, you might consider upgrades. Simple performance modifications such as upgrading your tyres, brakes and suspension can all contribute to a faster and more stable car on the track.

TYRES

One of the first things you should look at upgrading is your tyres. Driving on the track puts alot more wear and tear on your tyres so you will naturally need to upgrade or replace these faster than other components. We like Nankang AR1 or Hancook RS4 which are well priced and are popular control tyres for many production race categories.

UPGRADED BRAKES

Upgrading your brakes and discs from stock can improve response and handling. We recommend Brembo Discs and Winmax pads for your track car.

Suspension Upgrades

Upgrading to coilovers, sway bars, and other suspension components can improve handling and stability, allowing you to take corners at higher speeds with more confidence.

Joining the Track Community

Participating in track days is also about being part of a community. Joining local clubs or online forums can connect you with fellow enthusiasts to share tips, experiences, and maybe even some friendly competition.

Final Thoughts

Whether you choose a Subaru BRZ, a Mazda MX-5, Porsche 911 or even your childhood dream car, the most important aspect of track driving is to have fun and improve your skills in a safe environment. With the right preparation, a suitable car, and a passion for driving, track days can be an incredibly rewarding hobby. Remember to start slow, prioritise safety, and most importantly, enjoy every lap. Track days are not just about the cars; they're about the experience and the people you meet along the way.

Happy driving! 🏎️💨

Maximising Your Performance on Track

Unleash Your Full Potential on the Track

Looking to elevate your performance at the Pheasant Wood Circuit or One Raceway? Explore the world of race car hire and track days to sharpen your skills and conquer the racing challenges ahead.

In the world of motorsports, every second counts. Whether you're a seasoned racer or an enthusiast looking to experience the thrill of the track, the ultimate goal is to improve your performance and perhaps shave those critical milliseconds off your lap time. If you're planning to hit Pheasant Wood Circuit or any other racing venue, consider how race car hire and well-planned track days at venues like One Raceway can play a pivotal role in enhancing your skills. In this article, we'll delve into how you can maximise your performance on the track.

Understanding the Circuit: Pheasant Wood Circuit

Before you can conquer a track, you need to understand its nuances. Pheasant Wood Circuit, located in Marulan, NSW, offers a challenging layout that requires precision and skill. The circuit is known for its tight turns and technical sections that test a driver's handling and braking capabilities.

Analysing the Layout

To truly master Pheasant Wood, take the time to analyse the circuit layout. Study the racing line, identify braking points, and visualize how you'll navigate each corner. Understanding the flow of the track will allow you to anticipate movements better and maintain higher speeds through the corners.

Learning from Others

One effective way to get a head start is to watch footage of experienced drivers tackling the circuit. Pay close attention to their steering inputs, braking timing, and throttle application. Observing others can give you valuable insights into the most effective strategies for each section of the track.

Race Car Hire: Choosing the Right Vehicle

To maximise your track day experience, it's crucial to have a vehicle that's up to the task. Race car hire services offer an array of performance vehicles that are track-ready and capable of providing the thrill you seek.

Benefits of Race Car Hire

Hiring a race car for track days offers several advantages:

  • Access to High-Performance Vehicles: Without the commitment of purchasing and maintaining a race car, you can still experience driving a high-performance machine.

  • Professional Preparation: Rental race cars are typically well-maintained and prepared by professionals, ensuring safety and reliability on the track.

  • Cost-Effectiveness: Hiring a race car can be more cost-effective than owning one, especially if you only plan to attend a few track days each year.

Selecting the Right Car for You

When choosing a race car to hire, consider your driving experience and what you want to achieve on the track. Some drivers may prefer a car with advanced aerodynamics and a powerful engine, while others might opt for something lighter and more nimble to hone their cornering skills.

Preparing for Your Track Day at One Raceway

One Raceway offers an excellent opportunity for drivers to practice and improve their skills. Preparation is key to making the most out of your track days.

Physical and Mental Preparation

To perform at your best, you need to be in good physical and mental shape. Get plenty of rest before the event, stay hydrated, and eat nutritious foods that will provide sustained energy. Mentally prepare by visualizing the track and your laps, which can help improve focus and reaction time when you're behind the wheel.

Understanding Track Rules and Etiquette

Every track has its own set of rules and etiquette that must be followed for the safety of all participants. Familiarise yourself with One Raceway's specific guidelines, including flag meanings, pit lane procedures, and overtaking protocols.

Making Use of On-Track Instruction

Many track day providers offer the option of on-track instruction. Working with an experienced instructor can provide you with tailored advice and instant feedback on your driving. Instructors can help you identify areas for improvement and provide tips on car control, braking, and cornering techniques.

Track Days: Tips for Success

Attending a track day is about more than just driving fast. It's an opportunity to learn, refine your skills, and connect with fellow enthusiasts. Here are some tips to ensure you get the most out of your experience.

Focus on Consistency

Consistent lap times are often more important than a single fast lap. Work on maintaining a steady pace and gradually improve your speed as you become more comfortable with the car and the circuit.

Analyse Your Performance

Take the time to review data and video recordings of your laps, if available. Analysing your performance can help you see where you're losing time and what you're doing right. Use this information to make adjustments for your next session.

Stay Patient and Practice

Improving your track performance doesn't happen overnight. Be patient with yourself and recognise that every lap is a learning experience. Practice is essential, and each track day is an opportunity to develop your skills further.

Conclusion: Embracing the Track Day Experience

Maximising your performance on the track requires a combination of understanding the circuit, choosing the right vehicle, preparing adequately, and adopting the right mindset. Whether you're at Pheasant Wood Circuit, One Raceway, or any other racing venue, remember that track days are as much about learning and development as they are about speed.

Embrace the experience, learn from each lap, and enjoy the process of becoming a better driver. With the right approach and resources, you'll not only maximise your performance on the track but also discover a rewarding hobby that can bring a lifetime of excitement and fulfillment.

Physical and Mental Conditioning

Racing is as much a mental sport as it is a physical one. A good driver should include physical fitness training in their program to improve endurance and strength, particularly in the upper body and core. Equally important is mental conditioning, which can involve techniques such as visualization, concentration exercises, and even sim racing to sharpen your mental acuity and decision-making under pressure.

A beautiful weekend of driving at Sydney Motorsport Park in the NSW Production Touring R3. We couldn't get Ronin out of the seat after Sydney 300 so we left him there ready for Test & Tune on Friday.

Head Coach Phil Alexander made the day about car familirisation and spacial awareness out on track. This was Ronin's second race in an SP25 having previously driven at Winton.

Saturday was qualifying and an 18 minute race. Qualified second in class and ending up second in first race with the best time being a 1:55.3 - a two second improvement on his fastest qualifying lap.

Sunday rolled round with yet more beautiful weather. Ronin's driving improved yet again with his fastest lap in the final race a 1:54.8. Managed to take out first place in the class in the two races on Sunday which gave us the podium win for the round.

Massive congrats to Ronin who has gone from strength to strength. Improving by 4 seconds over the weekend is a huge feather in your cap and another win under the belt is just awesome!

Big thanks to our partners over at One Raceway we were stoked to be able to represent the new track with a class win 🏆🏆🏆

SYDNEY 300 RUNDOWN

“It was a steep learning curve for both drivers…” The Sydney 300 at Sydney Motorsport Park did not fail to be an exciting race. With two newcomers behind the wheel of the RaceAway Mazda MX5 the goal was to experience racing with the “big kids” and to bring the car home.

Drivers Ronin Linden-Mayer and Michael Buckley had a blast over the weekend taking on the Pitcher Partners Sydney 300. Both drivers new faces amongst the crowd and stepping into the higher level of racing in the RaceAway Mazda MX5. The goal for the weekend - race with the big kids and bring the car home, and boy did they do just that.

The times started out around 2:08 during practice, and knocked off 2 seconds for qualifying. Head coach Phil Alexander commenting that the drivers in the field were really pushing their cars to the limit. This was evident when the sun went down and the Sydney 300 started. Safety flag after safety flag resulting in 19 DNF's.

The MX5 took a turn during a safety flag restart with Buckley holding his own at the front of 30 cars until turn 8 when a tap in the right hand rear caused a spin and left him exposed to the oncoming traffic. He was able to limp (emphasis on limp) the car into pit lane with the damage assessed as a steering arm, panel work and broken wheel. The crew sprung into action - race tape, jack and spare wheel at the ready. Phil's extensive knowledge in endurance racing prioritising the repairs required to effect a quick turn around. Where most teams would pack up, the crew pulled together and were able to get the car out to finish the final 5 laps and take the chequered flag.

The boys running their fastest lap - a 2:00 flat, showing a solid improvement over the weekend and continuing our 100% finish rate in the Sydney 300.

Phils comments about the weekend "it was a steep learning curve for both drivers, they gained invaluable knowledge in race craft, bring-the-car-home ethos and driving with the big kids"

A massive thanks to our stellar team, Ben Swatton, Jack Winter, Scott Freestone, Karen Alexander and Rod Tippett. You came together and got the car back on the field whilst supporting the drivers - couldn't ask for more

Shout out to Motor Racing Australia and Pitcher Partners for another fantastic event. See you next year!

Winton 300 - 1st in Class

Pole position in the Winton 300, RaceAway Mazda SP25 taking on the iconic mini enduro at Winton Raceway with drivers Manarth Prasad and Ronin Linden-Mayer. Having practiced at Pheasant Wood Circuit the boys were ready to step it up from the Deputy 4 Hour to the state level NSW Production Touring round.

What an AWESOME weekend at the Winton 300. The team took Manarth Prasad and Ronin Linden-mayer down to the Victorian track, the first state level race for the boys. Taking on NSW Production Touring was the next level for both racers stepping up from track days and smaller club racing. Having practiced the week before in the Deputy 4 Hour, both drivers were ready to take on the longer track noting there were several straights to work on getting up to speed.

The nature of Winton is well suited to having trained at Pheasant Wood Circuit with nice sweeping straights followed by really tight corners that come back on themselves. Head coach Phil Alexander saying that he worked with the drivers on developing a consistent cornering and braking sequence whilst being mindful of keeping the car balanced particularly into turn 7. Prasad noted the straights were a great way to gain speed and working on the corner exit really set them up.

Fantastic to have the team bring home pole position for class E with many other competitors noting the drivers excellent traffic management particularly in amongst the faster cars.

Huge thanks to the crew: Kai Barlow and Toony Moore both on driver assist and spanners. Karen Alexander for socials management and driver welbeing and Head Coach Phil Alexander once again heading up the team.

Congrats boys - one for the pool room!

Calling all young drivers!

Discover the thrill of track driving for young racers! Learn about our coaching programs and beginner-friendly track cars designed for budding talents as young as 14. From mastering essential skills like downshifting and spatial awareness to ensuring safety with proper gear, our training focuses on solid development and safety. Start their journey today with expert coaching and accessible track day options!

Did you know that budding young racers as young as 14 can hit the track?

At RaceAway we're passionate about nurturing young talent and ensuring they have the right skills to succeed on the track. We see plenty of young drivers on the tarmac who have usually started their journey in karting. Our goal with these keen ones is to ensure they have the basics down in driving a manual car, can apply these in a modified racing environment and get plenty of practice on the track.

Early skills we develop:

  • Spatial awareness - ensuring they are using their peripherals, staying the line and being courteous of other drivers

  • Downshifting into corners - bringing awareness of the sound and feel of the revs as this happens

  • The feel of the vehicles grip on the road and how/why this may be compromised

These points are essential for saftey and a solid development of their racing skills.

Where do you start (aka, where to spend the money)?

  • Coaching - A good coach is key to proper development and keeping them safe on the track. Whether they want to get into racing or simply dip a toe into track days, the value they will get out of one-on-one coaching will set them up for success.

  • Hire Cars - Made for beginners, the PWC Mazda 2's or RA Mazda 3 track cars are perfect for young starters. Accesible and easy to use, they ensure a good base in manual driving skills that can be easily applied to other vehicles. Hiring a track car also prevents the wear-and-tear going on the family car - especially while they are still figuring things out!

  • Gear - To start, ensure your teen has an FIA approved helmet (not a motorcross helmet) and good racing shoes. Racing shoes have a thinner sole allowing the driver to feel the pedals. This will allow them to develop good pedal skills with the proper gear. A long sleeve shirt and long pants will be fine for early track days - upgrading to a racing suit when you have a clearer idea of their goals.

Ready to start your young ones journey on the track? Get in touch with us today to learn more about our training programs!

B6HR WRAP UP 2024

Raceaway takes out 2nd and 3rd place in the Bathurst 6 Hour 2024. With two immaculately prepped Mazda E class cars, the Phil Alexander led teams perform on the field pulling two podium finishes. The Bathurst 6 Hour is the biggest enduro around the Mountain, offering a chance to conquer the hallowed tarmac.

TWO PODIUM FINISHES

Bathurst 6 Hour, race car hire, mount panorama, tracck days, raceaway, one raceway, trackschool, motorsport australia, ardc, racing nsw, pheasant wood circuit, sydney motorsport park, winton raceway, racing school, track car, hire a race car

PHEW excuse me while we recover from the biggest weekend in the RaceAway calender. It was our goal this year to enter not one but TWO cars into the epic endurance race over Easter and we are pleased to report we did just that.

In the RaceAway branded car we had drivers Scott Tidyman, Ben Shaw and Seth Gilmore and in the One Raceway car, Wil Longmore, Cal Gardiner and Tony Gardiner.

Bathurst 6 Hour, race car hire, mount panorama, tracck days, raceaway, one raceway, trackschool, motorsport australia, ardc, racing nsw, pheasant wood circuit, sydney motorsport park, winton raceway, racing school, track car, hire a race car

Both cars performed beautifully during practice and head coach Phil Alexander was pleased with their times commenting the builds were faster than the previous year due to a lighter rollcage. Qualifying 1st in class the One Raceway car pulled a 46.92 with the RaceAway car hitting 2.49.

First up was Scott Tidyman who was double handling with the APRA support category. Jumping into the hot seat for the first drive appeared to work well, having just achieved the fastest lap of the APRA race meet he pulled it on again and achieved the fastest lap of the race for car no.35. A very tidy 2:48.3. Head coach Alexander noted Tidyman’s “strong and considered driving” maintained pace and was easy on the car.

Bathurst 6 Hour, race car hire, mount panorama, tracck days, raceaway, one raceway, trackschool, motorsport australia, ardc, racing nsw, pheasant wood circuit, sydney motorsport park, winton raceway, racing school, track car, hire a race car

Entering the field for the lunchtime shift was Ben Shaw. Traffic was the name of the game with many yellow flags and safety cars ensuring the groups had not settled into their usual patter across the field. The highlight of Shaw’s drive was a 4 lap battle with the eventual class E winners… “we passed each other several times while managing the large field of class X cars coming through, and at one stage we ran side by side all the way from forest elbow to the chase!”.

Bathurst 6 Hour, race car hire, mount panorama, tracck days, raceaway, one raceway, trackschool, motorsport australia, ardc, racing nsw, pheasant wood circuit, sydney motorsport park, winton raceway, racing school, track car, hire a race car

To bring the car home we had the youngest driver in the race Seth Gilmore. Only having recently turned 16, Gilmore set himself apart as one to watch during practice, proving that even on his L plates he could certainly keep up with the team. Entering in the fourth hour of the race he got caught up in traffic that landed him in the wall up at forest elbow. Fortunately the damage was minimal (lower suspension control arm and steering components) and with an accurate eyeballed wheel alignment the crew got the RaceAway car back onto the tarmac within 20 minutes.

Bathurst 6 Hour, race car hire, mount panorama, tracck days, raceaway, one raceway, trackschool, motorsport australia, ardc, racing nsw, pheasant wood circuit, sydney motorsport park, winton raceway, racing school, track car, hire a race car

Gilmore brought the car across the finish line in second place.

On the other side of the garage, the One Raceway car experienced a gearbox selection problem during Cal Gardiners stint in the first two hours. He was able to park it out of the way safely up the top of the mountain and lost a few laps in wait for the safety car. The team led by Dean Alessi replaced the gearbox within 40 minutes and got the car back out there. Without any more faults, the drivers managed to finish the enduro in third place landing the father son team on the podium.

Bathurst 6 Hour, race car hire, mount panorama, tracck days, raceaway, one raceway, trackschool, motorsport australia, ardc, racing nsw, pheasant wood circuit, sydney motorsport park, winton raceway, racing school, track car, hire a race car

This epic achievement was speaheaded by Bathurst legend and RaceAway head coach Phil Alexander who worked tirelessly on the builds, putting the team together and coaching the drivers. His lifetime of experience at Bathurst meant the team performed seamlessly with no penalties AND enjoyed their weekend.

Massive thanks to our partners, sponsors and team for making this happen. Bring on B6HR 2025

B6HR DRIVER LINEUP 3

Welcoming Scott Tidyman to the Bathurst 6 Hour team. The Road To Bathurst RaceAway team is excited to have his experience on board. Having driven in at Australian Pulsar Association Series for a number of years, Scott has driven Mount Panorama several times.

Welcome Scott Tidyman to the Bathurst 6 Hour Team

Scott is a regular in the APRA series and will be taking on the Mountain in the support race as well as the 6 hour. A formidable driver, Scott has plenty of experience in Formula Ford and endurance racing having done the APRA series for a number of years. We are looking forward to having his experience behind the wheel!

We caught up with Scott for a few ‘get to know you’ questions:

Which part of Mount Panorama are you most excited to take on?

  • I am looking forward to improving over the top from the cutting to the elbow. There is a lot of lap time to be had across the top.

How have you prepared for this years race, physically and mentally?

  • Having raced the last two years in the Pulsar and again in 2024 at the 6 hour support races. Being a similar car with front wheel drive it should make me pretty comfortable in the Mazda 3.

Have you had any previous experience at mount panorama or endurance racing?

  • Yes plenty of endurance experience as well as having run in the APRA Pulsar support category at Bathurst 3 years in a row.

Expectations for this years race?

  • Definitely expect to be on the podium in our class and hopefully the top step

Looking forward to seeing Scott behind the wheel this year!
