Viola Private Wealth Sydney 300 – Race Recap

2025 sydney 300 @ sydney motorsport park - motor racing australia

RaceAway Track Time returned to Sydney Motorsport Park on May 17, 2025, for the Viola Private Wealth Sydney 300, fielding our Mazda 3 SP25 just weeks after its strong performance at the Bathurst 6 Hour. Driven by Raphael Wood and Jason Liddell, our car stood out in a record-breaking 60-car field — the largest in Sydney 300 history.

We were proud to bring home:

  • 6th in Division E

  • 28th Outright

  • 1st Naturally Aspirated Production Car to Finish

A Night of Intense Racing: Race Report

Qualifying

We qualified just 0.6 seconds off our breakout time, placing us 7th in Division E out of 12 entries — the most Division E cars ever seen at the Sydney 300. Our time: 1:54.6101.

Raf’s Opening Stint

Raf Wood took the green flag and quickly found his rhythm, but a fuel leak incident from another car forced him to take evasive action and lose several positions early. Undeterred, Raf dug in and began working his way back through the class, improving lap times with every circuit.

Pit Strategy Pays Off

A well-timed Safety Car provided the perfect opportunity for our fuel stop, tyre change, and driver swap. Thanks to smooth execution by our pit crew — Rod Tippett, Tony Moore, Nigel Fuke, and Townsend Signs’ fuel rig team — the car was back on track without a hitch.

Jason on the Charge

Jason Liddell took the wheel and quickly began picking off competitors. His stint was fast, clean, and commanding — his best lap a blistering 1:54.5493. He avoided drama during a hectic Safety Car restart involving multiple cars, including a close moment with an RX8.

Late-Race Drama

The skies opened with 7 laps to go, adding tension to the final stint. Jason stayed composed in slippery conditions and crossed the line 6th in Division E and 28th outright — a phenomenal effort for a naturally aspirated production car against a grid packed with high-horsepower machinery.

Record-Breaking Sydney 300: The Bigger Picture

This year’s race was historic:

  • 77 laps completed – the longest Sydney 300 ever

  • 60 starters, 18 DNFs, and just 68.3% finish rate

  • Rain, Safety Cars (7!), and countless lead changes

  • Mazda’s 10th outright Sydney 300 win

  • 110 drivers, 41 finishers – a high attrition but fierce competition

For us, this event underlined our race prep quality and driver focus. In a race where just finishing is an achievement, to bring home a Division top-10 and outright top-half is a result we’re proud of.
