What Happened to the Yellow Pages RX7?

The Yellow Pages RX7 is a cult classic of Australian motorsport, a striking machine that raced alongside legends in Production Touring Group C. Driven by Phil Alexander and Tony Kavich in the Bathurst 1000, the car's bold yellow livery and unique backstory make it unforgettable. The sponsorship deal, secured by Phil through a bold pitch at Yellow Pages headquarters, turned this RX7 into an icon. Now, thanks to Carey McMahon and his meticulous restoration, the legendary RX7 is still race-ready, preserving its place in motorsport history. #YellowPagesRX7 #PhilAlexander #ProductionTouring #RX7 #Bathurst1000

Written by Kinsey Alexander -

As a young girl I heard the war stories about my dads racing career. It was Mazda this and RX7 that. A career that spanned decades and continents. It was hard to make head or tail of some of the stories because what my dad sees as “amazing” is very different to the outside world. Phil Alexander puts alot of stock into being the underdog and he holds high the value of being able to come out on top against all odds. It’s not neccesarily all about the wins or the accolades - it’s the gearbox that got rebuilt overnight and re-entered to finish the race.

For me, this meant that it took until I stood on the main straight of Bathurst as a 30 something-year-old to really understand the scope and enormity of my dad’s career. One that may be remembered by the Yellow Pages RX7.

CHECK OUT THE VIDEO ⤵️

During the Bathurst 6 Hour in 2023, not one, but two “fans” popped in our garage to see Phil. One had brought in a model car of the Yellow Pages RX7. I’m used to picking up the “breadcrumbs” of stories and knowledge that naturally filter through as the manager of RaceAway, and it pinged in my brain, we need to do a story on this.

I had brought up Bathurst with Phil many many times. He always spoke about his beloved Tokico RX7 which top 10’d in the 1000 back in the early 1980’s, both under his driving and that of the Ron Gillards and Mark Gibbs teams. To say the Tokico RX7 was held high on the shelf was an understatement - many a time my parents had made the joke that I (their first born daughter) was to be named after this vehicle. It’s pretty rarified air to be pulling a top 10 in the Bathurst 1000 and again it wasn’t until recently I fully understood the enormity of this.

Turning the page quite literally to the Yellow Pages RX7. A call came in from the highly intelligent and very well spoken Carey McMahon (we got on like a house on fire). Carey was rebuilding the Yellow Pages RX7 and wanted Phil to be at the test run. I thought - why not - great for the socials. As car rebuilds go, it was sometime, maybe 6 months to a year later that this eventuated.

Pulling up at the garage, the stunning Yellow Pages RX7 was there in all it’s (very yellow) glory. Phil walks in and I can see him eyeing the car off thinking ‘old friend’.

Let’s get to the story. Phil is sitting at his desk at Alexander Rotary, #35 Paramatta Road. The air is thick with that “New Car Smell” which only faintly covers the gearbox oil smell. He’s checking out the Yellow Pages which Alexander Rotary has been advertising in and he says to himself “one of the squares is about $4000… that’s $16,000 a page.” I imagine at this point he scoffs to himself and thinks, boy i’m in the wrong business. So as legends go, he calls up his mate Nick Middenway who “…was apart of the ARDC somehow…” - more importantly was an artist. Nick paints up a Yellow Pages covered RX7 because “…back in those days there were no graphic designers, vinyl lettering or computers per say…”

Phil, with artwork underarm, marches up to the Yellow Pages offices “somewhere in North Sydney.” At this point in the story I asked him - Did you book an appointment? He cheekily smiled at me and replies as if I were accusing him “Yeah, of course”. As Phil tells it, he showed them the artwork and said something to the words of “How’s this then folks?” and they agreed to sponsoring the car.

As his Tokico RX7 was leased that year to Ron Gillard and Mark Gibbs, he snagged a drive with panel beater Tony Kavich who had a Bathurst ready (but not-yet-yellow) RX7.

I can understand, through the lens of my fathers eyes, why he didn’t speak about the Yellow Pages RX7 much as I was growing up. Phil was coming off of the back of a 9th place finish in 1983 in the Tokico car. The Yellow Pages car sadly didn’t live up to expectations and had “…issues” during the race. Starting off in 43rd position, the car was pulled after 177 laps with engine issues (did someone say rotary?). But this isn’t the point of the story.

The Yellow Pages RX7 was a striking car on the grid. Many of the touring cars featured lengthwise racing stripes in red and blue from top to tail. If you closed your eyes and imagined racing back in the 80’s you would be able to sum up the general vibe. The Yellow Pages in bold yellow with the black walking fingers logo certainly stood out, especially with how widely known the company was. I need not get on my high horse and explain to the younger folk that the Yellow Pages was an essential household item, the thick books full of businesses in every home right next to the family phone - and boy did they take up alot of space (not happy Jan). Coupled with the racing era of legends the Yellow Pages RX7 sat on the stage with the likes of Dick Johnson, Allan Moffat and Peter Brock, regulars in the Production Touring group C Class.

And this is the point of the story I would like to make.

Phil Alexander, self-made, mechanic, rotary expert, racer, had a pretty simple dream - to race at Bathurst. Strolled into the Australian Yellow Pages headquarters, armed with a piece of artwork and pitched his story. To this day, the Yellow Pages RX7 is a cult classic - the poster child of the Group C Production Touring Class. And, like my dad, it’s still ready to race - thanks to the diligent efforts of Carey McMahon and Nigel Bolling.

Yellow Pages RX7, Production Touring Car Class C, Phil Alexander, Philip Alexander, Tony Kavich, Carey McMahon Racing, RX7 Phil Alexander, Alexander Rotary, Bathurst 1000, Hardy Bathurst 1000, Class C Bathurst 1000, RX7 Bathurst 1000

Huge thank you to Carey McMahon & Nigel Bolling for rebuilding the Yellow Pages RX7 and allowing Phil to have a run. What a fantastic way to be reunited.

Round 1: Phillip Island Raceway (March 1–2)

Renowned for its sweeping corners and oceanside views, Phillip Island challenges drivers with high-speed turns and elevation changes. The RX8’s balanced chassis thrives here, highlighting driver skill. This two-day meeting includes a practice/qualifying session and multiple races, guaranteeing you plenty of laps.

Round 2: Winton Raceway (May 9–11)

Part of the Motorsport Australia NSW State Championship, Winton Raceway is a tight, technical circuit dubbed “Australia’s action track.” Its slower corners demand consistency, rewarding precise throttle control. Over three days, drivers undergo practice and qualifying before tackling longer-format races, making it ideal for those wanting to refine racecraft or work toward their National Racing License sign-off.

Round 3: Sydney Motorsport Park (June 20–21)

Also part of the NSW State Championship, Sydney Motorsport Park (SMSP) presents a mix of fast straights and demanding corners. With the Mazda RX8’s nimble handling, you’ll appreciate every twist and turn of this premier facility.

Round 4: Sydney Motorsport Park (August 29–31)

Returning to SMSP for another NSW State Championship round, competitors can fine-tune their setups from Round 3. This three-day format often includes extended practice and additional sessions, meaning even more seat time to sharpen your skills and accumulate those crucial license endorsements.

Round 5: Sydney Motorsport Park (September 26–28)

Back again at SMSP for the penultimate NSW State Championship round, drivers benefit from substantial practice, qualifying, and multiple races over three days. Expect tight battles as championship aspirations escalate, ensuring spectators and racers alike enjoy high-octane drama.

Round 6: Morgan Park (October/November 30–2)

The season finale at Morgan Park—a circuit known for straightforward layouts but demanding precision—wraps up the RX8 Cup year. Even here, multi-day schedules provide ample laps to test your mettle in the final run to the checkered flag.

Racing On A Shoestring Budget

Racing enthusiasts, are you ready to hit the track without breaking the bank? Explore budget-friendly racing opportunities like race car hire, supersprints, club racing, and the magic of MX5 track cars. Let's dive into the world of adrenaline-pumping racing on a shoestring budget!

IS CHEAP RACING POSSIBLE?

For many, the thrill of racing is a passion waiting to be pursued, but the perception of high costs can often be a deterrent. However, racing on a budget is entirely possible, and you don’t need to break the bank to cross the checkered flag. Whether it’s through supersprints, club racing, or booking track days, there are several budget-friendly racing opportunities waiting for you. In this article, we’ll guide you through options to get you on the track without spending a fortune.

Is cheap racing possible? Australia pulsar racing association, pulsar racing, race car hire, raceaway track time, phil alexander, racecar hire, hire a race car, cheap racing, budget racing, how to get into motorsport, pheasant wood circuit, one race

THE AUSTRALIAN PULSAR RACING ASSOCIATION (APRA) IS A BUDGET FRIENDLY, COMPETITIVE ONE-MAKE SERIES

Understanding the Costs of Racing

Before diving into the world of racing, it’s important to have a realistic view of the costs involved. From the car itself to entry fees, gear, and maintenance, every aspect contributes to the budget. But don’t let this discourage you! With strategic planning and smart choices, these costs can be managed effectively.

Race Car Hire: A Cost-Effective Solution

For starters, race car hire is an excellent option for those looking to dip their toes into racing without immediately investing in a vehicle. One of the advantages of renting a race car is that they come equipped with the necessary specifications for various racing classes. This means that you can experience the thrill of racing without needing to invest in a car that meets specific racing requirements. Additionally, rental race cars often come with safety gear included, ensuring that you can enjoy the experience with peace of mind.

Renting a race car can be a great option for those who want to try their hand at racing without the long-term commitment of car ownership. By opting to rent a race car, you can enjoy the excitement of racing without the financial burden of purchasing and maintaining a high-performance vehicle. This allows you to experience the thrill of racing with a lower upfront cost, making it a more accessible option for those interested in the sport.

AFFORDABLE TRACK CARS: The Magic of THE MX5

The Mazda MX-5 has earned a reputation as a budget-friendly track car that doesn’t skimp on performance. These nimble and reliable vehicles are a mainstay in club racing and track days, providing an affordable entry point for enthusiasts.

Why MX5s Are Ideal for Budget Racing

MX5s are cost-effective due to their abundance, low cost of parts, and the supportive community around them. Many racing clubs and organisations have specific categories for MX5s, offering a competitive environment that focuses on driver skill rather than budget.

Discovering Budget-Friendly Racing Opportunities

Racing doesn’t have to be a wallet-emptying experience. There are numerous ways to enjoy the sport without spending a fortune.

Supersprints: Your Entry into Competitive Racing

Supersprints are timed competitions that focus on achieving the best single lap around a track. They are an excellent starting point for aspiring racers, providing the excitement of competition with lower costs compared to wheel-to-wheel racing. Entry fees for supersprints are typically reasonable, and since the events are less demanding on the car, maintenance costs are kept to a minimum.

TRACK EVENTS: GRASSROOTS MOTORSPORT

Track run events are often aimed at a grassroots level with budget friendly entry fees and regulations that encompass a wide range of affordable cars.

Pheasant Wood Circuit hosts a number of affordable events, the most notable - the Deputy 4 Hour Endurance Race. Split between 4 drivers this event offers ample track time and door to door racing over 4 hours.

READ MORE about the Deputy 4 Hour

Club Racing: Join the Community

Club racing is the heart of grassroots motorsport. By joining a local racing club, you gain access to a community of like-minded individuals and a variety of events tailored to different skill levels and budgets.

Track Days: Hone Your Skills

Track days are non-competitive events that allow you to drive your car on a professional racetrack. They are a great way to improve your driving skills and enjoy the performance of your car in a safe, controlled environment. While track days require you to have your own vehicle, they offer the freedom to participate as your budget allows, without the pressure of competition.

BUDGET RACING SUGGESTIONS

Some budget racing categories include:

  • Excel Series (single make series)

  • Australian Pulsar Racing Association Series (single make series)

  • MX5 Car Cup (single make with multiple classes)

  • Deputy 4 Hour Enduro (track run event)

  • Pheasant Wood Circuit Summer Series (track run event)

  • Motor Events Racing Series (all races aimed at being budget friendly)

Many of these racing series have classes which allow for you to enter on a budget. The one-make series we have suggested also provide a way of getting behind the wheel in a car that you can use in multiple categories.

How to Prepare for Your First Race

Once you’ve decided on the type of racing that suits your budget and interests, it’s time to prepare for your first race. Here’s what you need to know to get started.

Safety First: Gear and Requirements

Safety should always be your top priority. Investing in quality safety gear, such as a helmet, racing suit, gloves, and shoes, is essential. While it may seem like a significant expense, your safety is priceless, and many gear items are a one-time purchase that will serve you for multiple seasons.

Hot Tip: Club, state and national events require different levels of gear. Ensure you check with your provider that the requirements are met for your level of racing. You can check your supp regs for gear specifications.

Technical Preparation: Getting Your Car Race-Ready

If you’re using your own car, it will need to meet specific safety and technical requirements. If you’re prepping it for a certain category then download the supplementory regulations which provide the specifications you need to meet. Joining forums and connecting with experienced racers can help you understand the best practices for preparing your vehicle.

Insider Knowledge: Check the supp regs for requirements on in-car recording gear such as a GoPro or RaceKeeper. Many racing categories have made in-car recording gear mandatory with some even requiring it to be internally hardwired.

Maximizing Your Racing Budget

Racing on a budget requires savvy financial management. Here are some tips to help you stretch your dollars further on the track.

WATCH YOUR ENTRY FEES

Race entries often don’t include a practice day or a garage. If you’re looking at keeping costs down, compare the price of race practice to a track day earlier in the week and forgo the garage to save yourself some dollars.

Finding Sponsorships and Partnerships

Securing sponsorships can offset some of your racing costs. Local businesses may be interested in partnering with you in exchange for advertising on your race car or gear. Be prepared to pitch the benefits of sponsoring you, such as brand exposure to a niche audience.

DIY Maintenance and Upgrades

Learning to perform basic maintenance and upgrades on your car can save you a substantial amount of money. There’s a wealth of information available online, and the racing community is usually eager to share knowledge with newcomers.

Buying Second-Hand Gear and Parts

Buying second-hand racing gear and car parts can lead to significant savings. Always ensure that the gear meets current safety standards and that the parts are in good condition.

COOK YOUR OWN MEALS

Buying meals at the track adds up! Be prepared on race day by prepping your own food and taking plenty of water. You’d be surprised how quickly these little buys add up.

Conclusion

Racing on a budget is not only possible, it’s a reality for many motorsport enthusiasts. By exploring budget-friendly options such as race car hire, supersprints, and club racing, and by making smart choices like choosing a budget friendly track car, you can enjoy the adrenaline rush of racing without the financial strain. Prepare properly, maximise your budget, and immerse yourself in the racing community. The track awaits you—full speed ahead!

NSW Production Touring Winner

Winner winner! Driver Ronin Linden-mayer takes home first place in the NSW Production Touring round 3 at Sydney Motorsport Park driving the One Raceway Mazda SP25.

A beautiful weekend of driving at Sydney Motorsport Park in the NSW Production Touring R3. We couldn't get Ronin out of the seat after Sydney 300 so we left him there ready for Test & Tune on Friday.

Head Coach Phil Alexander made the day about car familirisation and spacial awareness out on track. This was Ronin's second race in an SP25 having previously driven at Winton.

Saturday was qualifying and an 18 minute race. Qualified second in class and ending up second in first race with the best time being a 1:55.3 - a two second improvement on his fastest qualifying lap.

Sunday rolled round with yet more beautiful weather. Ronin's driving improved yet again with his fastest lap in the final race a 1:54.8. Managed to take out first place in the class in the two races on Sunday which gave us the podium win for the round.

Massive congrats to Ronin who has gone from strength to strength. Improving by 4 seconds over the weekend is a huge feather in your cap and another win under the belt is just awesome!

Big thanks to our partners over at One Raceway we were stoked to be able to represent the new track with a class win 🏆🏆🏆

SYDNEY 300 RUNDOWN

“It was a steep learning curve for both drivers…” The Sydney 300 at Sydney Motorsport Park did not fail to be an exciting race. With two newcomers behind the wheel of the RaceAway Mazda MX5 the goal was to experience racing with the “big kids” and to bring the car home.

Drivers Ronin Linden-Mayer and Michael Buckley had a blast over the weekend taking on the Pitcher Partners Sydney 300. Both drivers new faces amongst the crowd and stepping into the higher level of racing in the RaceAway Mazda MX5. The goal for the weekend - race with the big kids and bring the car home, and boy did they do just that.

The times started out around 2:08 during practice, and knocked off 2 seconds for qualifying. Head coach Phil Alexander commenting that the drivers in the field were really pushing their cars to the limit. This was evident when the sun went down and the Sydney 300 started. Safety flag after safety flag resulting in 19 DNF's.

The MX5 took a turn during a safety flag restart with Buckley holding his own at the front of 30 cars until turn 8 when a tap in the right hand rear caused a spin and left him exposed to the oncoming traffic. He was able to limp (emphasis on limp) the car into pit lane with the damage assessed as a steering arm, panel work and broken wheel. The crew sprung into action - race tape, jack and spare wheel at the ready. Phil's extensive knowledge in endurance racing prioritising the repairs required to effect a quick turn around. Where most teams would pack up, the crew pulled together and were able to get the car out to finish the final 5 laps and take the chequered flag.

The boys running their fastest lap - a 2:00 flat, showing a solid improvement over the weekend and continuing our 100% finish rate in the Sydney 300.

Phils comments about the weekend "it was a steep learning curve for both drivers, they gained invaluable knowledge in race craft, bring-the-car-home ethos and driving with the big kids"

A massive thanks to our stellar team, Ben Swatton, Jack Winter, Scott Freestone, Karen Alexander and Rod Tippett. You came together and got the car back on the field whilst supporting the drivers - couldn't ask for more

Shout out to Motor Racing Australia and Pitcher Partners for another fantastic event. See you next year!

Winton 300 - 1st in Class

Pole position in the Winton 300, RaceAway Mazda SP25 taking on the iconic mini enduro at Winton Raceway with drivers Manarth Prasad and Ronin Linden-Mayer. Having practiced at Pheasant Wood Circuit the boys were ready to step it up from the Deputy 4 Hour to the state level NSW Production Touring round.

What an AWESOME weekend at the Winton 300. The team took Manarth Prasad and Ronin Linden-mayer down to the Victorian track, the first state level race for the boys. Taking on NSW Production Touring was the next level for both racers stepping up from track days and smaller club racing. Having practiced the week before in the Deputy 4 Hour, both drivers were ready to take on the longer track noting there were several straights to work on getting up to speed.

The nature of Winton is well suited to having trained at Pheasant Wood Circuit with nice sweeping straights followed by really tight corners that come back on themselves. Head coach Phil Alexander saying that he worked with the drivers on developing a consistent cornering and braking sequence whilst being mindful of keeping the car balanced particularly into turn 7. Prasad noted the straights were a great way to gain speed and working on the corner exit really set them up.

Fantastic to have the team bring home pole position for class E with many other competitors noting the drivers excellent traffic management particularly in amongst the faster cars.

Huge thanks to the crew: Kai Barlow and Toony Moore both on driver assist and spanners. Karen Alexander for socials management and driver welbeing and Head Coach Phil Alexander once again heading up the team.

Congrats boys - one for the pool room!

Calling all young drivers!

Discover the thrill of track driving for young racers! Learn about our coaching programs and beginner-friendly track cars designed for budding talents as young as 14. From mastering essential skills like downshifting and spatial awareness to ensuring safety with proper gear, our training focuses on solid development and safety. Start their journey today with expert coaching and accessible track day options!

Did you know that budding young racers as young as 14 can hit the track?

At RaceAway we're passionate about nurturing young talent and ensuring they have the right skills to succeed on the track. We see plenty of young drivers on the tarmac who have usually started their journey in karting. Our goal with these keen ones is to ensure they have the basics down in driving a manual car, can apply these in a modified racing environment and get plenty of practice on the track.

Early skills we develop:

  • Spatial awareness - ensuring they are using their peripherals, staying the line and being courteous of other drivers

  • Downshifting into corners - bringing awareness of the sound and feel of the revs as this happens

  • The feel of the vehicles grip on the road and how/why this may be compromised

These points are essential for saftey and a solid development of their racing skills.

Where do you start (aka, where to spend the money)?

  • Coaching - A good coach is key to proper development and keeping them safe on the track. Whether they want to get into racing or simply dip a toe into track days, the value they will get out of one-on-one coaching will set them up for success.

  • Hire Cars - Made for beginners, the PWC Mazda 2's or RA Mazda 3 track cars are perfect for young starters. Accesible and easy to use, they ensure a good base in manual driving skills that can be easily applied to other vehicles. Hiring a track car also prevents the wear-and-tear going on the family car - especially while they are still figuring things out!

  • Gear - To start, ensure your teen has an FIA approved helmet (not a motorcross helmet) and good racing shoes. Racing shoes have a thinner sole allowing the driver to feel the pedals. This will allow them to develop good pedal skills with the proper gear. A long sleeve shirt and long pants will be fine for early track days - upgrading to a racing suit when you have a clearer idea of their goals.

Ready to start your young ones journey on the track? Get in touch with us today to learn more about our training programs!
