This weekend the RaceAway Track Time team took on the Motor Events Racing Fast & Furious 8hr enduro race at Sydney Motorsport Park in our Mazda MX5 and Bathurst winning SP25.

We had a strong driver line up in both cars - Stephen Doorey, Jake Weragoda, Andrew Wong and John Connolly in the MX5, and Jake Hextall, Grant Earlam and Bailey Howard in the SP25. Both teams were supported with a strong crew in Phil Alexander, Rod Tippett, Ben Swatton, Tony Moore, Nigel Fuke and the infamous Lachie Mineeff.

The day started out wet, cold and dark. Stephen and Jake were bolted in for the race start. Engines started and heart rates raised as the cars headed out onto the track. With no qualifying and random garage order we started towards the back of the almost 40 car field. The first few laps were still wet and the race start was cautious, but quickly dried and Jake started ripping through the field with Stephen hot on his heels landing 4th and 7th by the first hour.

We pitted on schedule with Grant into the SP25 and Jake Weragoda the MX5. Both did a fantastic job on an unfamiliar track and car, continuously improving. Stop 2, refuel, Bailey into the SP25 and John the MX5. Then Jake H back in the SP25 and Andrew in the MX5. Great clean racing all around, now up into 2nd and 3rd. Mid race Bailey ran off the road reporting bad handling, returning to the pits with a flat tyre.

Down a few laps but still 3rd, off he went. Next we hear from Jake W there’s contact at turn 2, the rules requiring us to pit and report it before continuing. A couple of laps later Jake went for a spin, and another tour through pit lane. For our last stops we went for the short fuel stop to maximise our position, sending Bailey in the SP25 and Stephen in the MX5, both told “go fast, but save fuel and look after the car.” ![]()

We crossed the line 2nd and 3rd in class with the fuel light on in both cars
The race threw a lot at us between safety cars and red flags, but both drivers and crew did wonderfully to put both cars on the podium - a mega effort we are so proud of!

Our next outing is in a couple of weeks with the RX8 Cup and MX5 Cup. Hit us up to save your seat!
